substrate in a grow out tank

is it necessary to have substrate in a grow out tank? i find it easier without substrate but it looks crappy, any opinions ?

IMO,keep the grow out tanks easy to clean.
Don't let asthetics get in the way as its not a display tank.

For grow outs you simply want the best water conditions possible. I've never used any substrate in my grow outs, other than a small scattering of crushed marble for P.H. purposes.
