Hi Guys,

New to this forum and may I say that i have, so far, found it to be very informative.

I have a MC, named Gary. He has pushed his way into being a part of the family and has forced me to buy a larger tank. His previous home was a 3 x 2 x 1.5. Naturally, he has outgrown this tank, so I have bought him a 6 x 2 x 2.

My question is, want other fish, if any, can I keep with him? He is currently 95mm long and I am suspecting him to grow further and more rapidly. Is this the case?

I understand that they are very territorial and may eat other fish smaller than him, however, I find the tank to be quite boring when he decides to hide in amongst the snags.

Your help and feedback will be very much appreciated.

Kenny

My first Question would be,
Do you feed the cod live food?
How often?
What type?

In the larger tank you could keep some perch. they would have to be on the large side but those are not to hard to come by. You could also try large fork tailed catfish.

My thoughts are that you should set up the other tank as a quarantine tank. Get the other fish perch or some rainbows and other natives and keep them for a few weeks just to make sure they have no diseases before introducing them to the Cod tank.

Cheers

95mm or cm?
is it was only 9.5 cm then there would be no problem introducing some salmon tail catfish or larger perch as bettamuse said.
You could also work with certain large trops depending on your water conditions.
Larger natives along the 10 cm or more mark are hard to come by.
but you should look for grunters like sooties and barcoo's.
They are also territorial, and can fend for themselves.
Just make sure whatever you put in there isn't too slow or too small.

Hey mate, great size tank for a cod, I'm running the same set up. My cod is about 450mm and I've grown him up with two tandanus catfish, they are about 300mm now, and have been in the same tank for over a year with no problems up until a couple of weeks ago and the cod started attacking them, he actually bit chunks out of their tails, so I moved them to another tank where one of them died soon after. I don't know if it's got anything to with their breeding cycle, as this is the time of year they breed, or maybe my cod is just a complete mungrel. One thing that makes me think it might have something to do with it's breeding season is that as soon as the catfish were removed the cod dug a big hole in the gravel, like a nest, but I am no expert. All I can say is if you get some tank mates for your cod, don't get too attached to them. I would love to see some pics of your set up.
cheers, Josh.

it might be breeding season, but breeding behavior doesn't really occur unless a fish of the same species (of the opposite sex) is present.
it's probably just going through puberty?
fish can be unpredictable sometimes, the effects vary depending on size and temperament of the fish itself.
My sooty grunters were really shy untill spring broke in.
Now they're just tiny sharks.

Hey, umm about your murray cod.. they are pretty temperamental and.. well i have had them in the past and i currently have one.. and what ive learned is that as long as they have there own 'territory' e.g. a cave or rocks to hide in they are quite fine to have with other fish. Currently i have a murray cod, archer fish, aussie bass, barramundi, a pleco and some silver dollars all in a 4ft tank. I know this sounds nuts but there all small and when they get a bit bigger im going to upgrade.. but i have good places for all the fish so there is no fighting in the sense.

With yours.. i would get more aussie natives.. they are the best! But yeah stick to your perch (silver and spangled), aussie bass maybe.. barra's and jardini. And have a lot of drift wood and rocks to simulate the mangroves.

i started a communal tank about 10 years ago with perch, barramundi, tandanis and a murray cod. The cod eventually ended up injuring or killing off all of the other fish in the tank even killed the barra's when they were nearly double his size, i still have "Muzz" and he/she? is about 60cm long and would weigh close to 3kg and is a very big part of the family :)
