Hey there everyone.

I have a tank with 6 x Texas, and have a pair in there who are deeply in love.. so much so that I get around 100 fry every 3 weeks or so..

I am removing the fry once they are freeswimming to a 90l tank I have, and they are growing really well (and quickly)

Some questions I have that hopefully you can answer:

Why are they breeding so much?

in my nursery tank, I am using a Pool filter sock material (around filter inlet) to stop them getting sucked up into the filter... It gets clogged with waste & dirt after about a week.. Is there a better way of stopping them from getting sucked in? Do I need to worry about this?

What should I do with them?? If I wanted to sell them where should I go, and how much are they worth??

How can I slow or stop the breeding (apart from separating ROmeo and Juliet)

Thanks

Toby

Sorry I'm unfamiliar with the species , but if they are cave dwellers you could remove their "love nest"lol

Thanks mate, BUt i have tried that and they will just go find another nest, or dig one out of gravel.. they seem pretty relaxed about the nest location..

Any one else got any idea's?

What actually triggers them to breed?

Theres not much you can do really...
Since texas cichlids form true pairs.
you could remove her for just a day or two and that should seperate the bond.
as far as slowing down is concerned.
You could drop the temperature a bit. (depending on what you have it on right now)
or you could feed less protein rich foods that are essential for egg production.

You could bring your fry to your lfs and they will mostly trade your fish for stuff or store credit depending on how nice they are.
but a texas cichlid an 1 long, you won't get much.
Unless they are a good 5 inches, you'll probably fetch a couple dollars worth.
It's only because lfs can get fish for heaps cheaper.
Remember, aquarium mark up is over 300%
