I just found this website this morning, its a company in QLD that overnight airfreights live fish and guarantee that the fish will be alive 100%.
Has anyone used this service before? Their prices seem good and the $13.95 delivery for 1 fish or 100 is a great lurk.
They even have feeder fish at 50 for $37 with free delivery!
heres the link anyway

Hi Daz
I have not used this service before, but would give it a go if I wanted to buy more rainbows, as they appear to have a good selection. At the moment I'm well stocked, but would be interested to hear from anyone what their experience was.
FWIW, I have bought live plants from a web site, and these arrived beautifully and are doing well, but that's of course not the same as buying live fish from a website.
Cheers

I've ordered from Live Fish. Unfortunately for me, my order did not arrive overnight as it needs to (with live fish), not sure where the fault lies with that (my local end or further back with the courier company), but 4 out of 4 electric blues were DOA, and half my electric yellows were close to death. 20 or so glass shrimps were also DOA.
Contacting the website I didn't hold much hope, however on offer of photographs showing the fish before they had been unpackaged etc, they credited my account for the fish that didn't make it. I found them excellent with communication, fantastic on after sales service as described above. My only gripe was the time it takes to actually ship your order from when you place it. In my case it was around 2 weeks I believe (which I didn't realise it would take that long when I ordered).
It's a good service particuarly for people who can't get to aquarium shops etc. But remember you get no advice, cannot view the fishes condition before purchasing and aren't supporting our industry of specialist aquarium shops.

Thats a real shame marc.
I've only ever bought shrimp from them. One time the courier stuffed up and the shrimp were dead.
They soon shipped a new lot and they came ok.
I guess its a bit of a gamble.

out of interest how are they sent, tiny tanks? envelopes filled with water!?
Marc
18th June 2007, 04:45 PM
Haha .. just the same as you buy them from your LFS or Pet Shop. Clear bags filled with water then in a polystyrene box.
Not sure they use and sedatives in the water as they do with international shipping.

Over the years I have bought and sold Discus interstate.
They were always shipped one fish per bag.Instead of air we pumped oxygen into the bags, then these went into polystrene boxes.
It's amazing how long they keep temperature for, especially when you pack many bags into a box.

Hey Dazz, how did you find the glass shrimp in the aquarium, were they for food or as cleaners? I was thinking of getting some to help with my algae problem in my 3 footer.

G'day mate,
I had them in a 3ft planted as cleaners. They really thrived and were breeding well in there.
I had heaps of them plus heaps of snails (not the big ugly apple snails) and a few bristlenose as the clean up crew  .
Together they did a great job!

Oh yeah, its best if you buy alot of them (say 50-100), not only for a better cleaning rate but it wont matter as much if you lose a few from the trip.
I'm going to get some in my newly set up 3ft soon.

Hi Kat,
These little guys are awsome! They are your little workers in your planted tanks.
They are cheap (cheaper the more you buy) and you don't need to feed them cause they clean up all the left over food and also do a good job cleaning up algae.
They only grow to about 1 inch so you can fit a fair few the tank. :)

Righto Darren, Now seeing as you seem to be the glass shrimp guru, how much stress do these little fellas put on the biomass of the tank? I listed a post in the beginners discussion about fish quantities in tanks but didn't get any replies, as I am already concerned about overstocking my tanks I want to be sure. heres the post in question:
Hi people , does any one know if there is a formula to calculate the amount of fish you can have in a tank?
I know it depends on the type of filtration , size of tank , water circulation, size of fish etc, but is there like a base line figure or anything???"
Also Dazz , what if there isn't an algae problem in the tank but you still want all the uneaten food to be cleaned up , will that be enough food for them? or will they starve ?
I know its alot of Q's Dazz but see how U go!

Struth mate i'm far from guru! i'm just going off my personal experience's.
As far as how many fish to have in a tank go's i've always avoided pushing a tank to its limits. So i've tried to keep the fish count as minimal as possible.
As far as an actual rule go's, i did see on tv once that if you where to line up all your fish (nose to tail) in a line, they should never be longer than your tanks length.
I dunno if thats a true one or not.
Even if your tank has no algea i think searching through the food scraps and debris will keep em goin.
I find that in a fully planted tank there's always something for them to work on.
Buy a few and see how U go! :p
Slight change of subject, On the weekend i was in an aquarium in dandenong on cheltnam rd.
On their front desk they had a small tank with a heap of Java moss in it.
I noticed something bright red in one corner and went for a closer look.
They had small shrimp that were bright red with white stripes.
I've seen these in planted tanks on other forums from over sea's but i thought that we could only get glass shrimp and river shrimp in aus.??
I asked him how much they were and he said 60 BUCKS EACH!!!! they were only one inch long!!
I believe they're called Crystal Red Dwarf Shrimp or Neocaridina sp.

Thats a cool looking shrimp mate, but at 60 bucks a pop i think i will get glass shrimp!
Thanks for the info mate , something is better than nothing when nothing is what you know!
Did you say your glass shrimp actually bred in your tank in a previous post?
Did you last order of glass shrimp arrive ok ? I was thinking of ordering 50 and splitting them between my 3 footer and my 5 footer next week.
@ Kat, where abouts in melbourne are you from? I will be placing an order next week i think and if you like we can split the deivery cost and get the price down on the shrimp, the more you buy the cheaper they are!

OK, I have just moved my 30cm albino Pleco out of my 3 footer and put him in my 5 footer, he has a heap more room now and seems happier?!
Anyway that now lets me assume that the load on my bio system in the 3 footer is ALOT lighter so I have ordered the glass shrimp from livefish.com.au and another 20 neons to compliment the planted tank!
I will let you all know how long it took from order time to delivery time and the condition of the livestock when i receive them.

Well I finally received my delivery and although it wasn't with out problems, the fish were alive and have survived well.
@sloory, i didn't get a text or an email to say they were sent at all, one of my grievances.
The delivery took 16 days in total and the delivery driver didn't leave the goods as was noted on the box, not Livefish.coms fault i know , but it took ALOT of organizing to get the shipment redelivered straight away.
Overall I think if you were in a town where getting to a LFS was a problem because of distance or health this service is a good one.
Would I use them again?
Yes i suppose i would , i would hope the problems I had were "One offs" and the next delivery was smoother.
I was surprised though that the polystyrene box they were delivered in didn't have a "LIVE FISH" sticker on it at all, just FRAGILE stickers.
The heat pack they supplied inside the box didn't seem to work too well, the water was cold and the goods were shipped 24hrs prior to me receiving them.
So there you go, an experiment in purchasing live fish over the internet.

Thats sad to hear mate.
I won't be using them anymore but only because i'm going to cut my fish keeping back to just frontosa in the near future.
And i don't think i'll be trusting them to deliver those fish.

Yes it is sad to hear, I think it is a great concept, especially for people that either don't have a good LFS or cant get to one, for one reason or another. If they were to get their crap together on the processing and delivery I would definitely use them , but once bitten twice shy at the moment.

Hi wombat
Sorry to hear about your bad experience, again :( .
As I just responded to Helen, my single experience with Livefish was good, but I agree with you that we should where possible support our LFS.
I'd probably use LF again for say glass shrimp again, but as I have about 3 or 4 LFSs within a reasonable driving distance (one is within a 10min walk) I would certainly prefer to go and see what's available locally. Also less stress!! (AND less stress on the fish!!).
Cheers

@ go guppy, i think thats all i will use livefish for in the future, glass shrimp, but if I'm getting a delivery anyway i guess i would get some fish also. my shrimp are breeding now so i hope i wont have to buy any more! I would use my LFS first if they had a decent collection of rainbows!
@ Aussie, i agree, some of there fish are expensive, but some are reasonably priced, and if you only have 1 LFS or none in your area its a good option, shame something as simple as delivery can be stuffed up so badly!

Speaking of which- ever since finding all those baby shrimp at your house ive noticed stacks in my tank too now! looks like all those pregnant shrimp arent going to waste like we thought! One of my blue rams was interested in a baby shrimp and just when i thought it was all over it shot off as quick as a rabbit! no chance of eating them i think  - the only problem is it looks like theres no chance in changing my gravel now!

You definitely need to know what your LFS is selling them for and compare before buying from livefish, I have found some prices really expensive and some very reasonable, even after adding the delivery charges.

Especially knowing their wholesale buy prices, some of their price are inflated for no apparent reason.
