hey everyone i have decided after about a month of my new tank with tropicals i am sick of them. You'll like that cichlidboy ahaha. Anyway i was wondering if a bass would be okay in my 3 footer? I will not keep him once he outgrows my tank cause i love these guys and would never want one to die because of me:)
anyway any info on how to keep these beautiful fish would help. e.g food, tank set up and other things that are necassary btw this is what my tank looks like now if these is okay for one or could i have two?
will three yo yo loaches be okay with bass/s. Thanks everyone:)
Excuse the plants yoyo loaches cant help themselves:P

got it right!
i dont hate tetras and such.
just, prefer my predators more =]
the tank looks good btw.
You can certainly keep two in a three footer for a while.
they grow moderately fast.
i haven't had one larger than 2 inches yet, so it's kinda hard to say.
although, they can certainly hold their own ground.
i'm keeping them with my africans for a bit till i get another tank.
as for food.
most natives are really picky and quickly lock on to a certain food.
make sure that you "wean" them onto pelleted foods asap.
although, young bass love blackworms and brine shrimp.
bass love lots of hiding spaces, especially when they are young.
but too many hiding spaces result in a bass that will never come out to feed.
so, add some lively surface feeder like platies or mollies, or even keep your tropicals for a while.
the tank mates will entice your bass to "stick with the crowd".
loaches would do well in a bass tank, since your bass will either hide all the time or hardly ever move from a spot.
the loaches will give the tank some interest and also clean up what ever foods your bass miss.

i have a couple of bass in my native tank which i bought about june @ about 4-5cm and they are now about 8cm. they will grow slowly when the weather is cold but grow quicker when the weather heats up. i would think if u bought a 5cm bass it would take about 18mnths to get to 20cm.
i keep my tank at room temp without a heater but if u have a heater they would grow much quicker and might only take about 12mnths to get to 20cm.

is 20cm the maximum for aussie bass in aquariums?
ok how often do you feed them?

with warmer temperatures, a fish's metabolism will become faster, thus eating more and growing slightly faster.
with bass, they seem to grow quite slowly without or without a heater.
i think that bass grow just about as quickly as barramundi.
around a year and you will see your bass reaching around the 10 cm mark.
as for the 20cm maximum.
what do you mean by that?

bass will get a lot bigger than 20cm, maybe 30-40cm depending on tank size and food etc. i feed my fish once a day.

decorations dont really matter.
but making it look like a river would be pretty cool.
i tried my best to make my barra tank look like the bottom of a river.
your bass will happily live in your 3'
as long as he can turn around and swim freely, hes fine.
just remember, bigger or more fish your have, more waste theres gnna be.

he'll end up eating them once they fit in his mouth. you should really only feed him pellets as our natives and most other predatory fish tend to "lock on" quickly to one particular food. once that happens, it'll be damn hard to get him or her back into the normal routine of eating pellets, let alone the bill that'll come out of continously getting feeders. bass get really territorial once they hit the three inch mark.

if ure going to get tank mates for him, make sure they are the same size and will grow up to be similiar. other natives would be a good choice, silver perch would be a good one to consider

i have a 4ft tank and has 2 bass, 2 silver perch, 2 spangled perch, 1 tandanus catfish and are all about 8-10cm and are doing fine together and they have grown up together and are all similar size. these are good together as they grow at similar rates.
also chiclid boy is right get him eating pellets and give him a treat of bloodworm or feeders once a week or less if u want to spend the extra money. but pellets are fine by them selves.
