i dont have gp's atm :(. but they are similar growth rate to the bass maybe a little bit faster if anything. they are probs rly shy atm but they will prob grow outta this and come out more. if u feed them at the same time each day, for example i feed mine at night when i turn the filters off with the light still on and there all used to it and come out as soon as i turn of th filter. so just try to get them into a routine and they should get used to it and be ready for food, thats when u can see them best :)

23rd December 2008, 12:13 PM
u could feed him heaps of different things and the same stuff u would feed ur bass: normal pellets, bloodworm (frozen or live), brime shrimp (frozen or live), feeder fish, anything else living in a pond eg. mosquito larvae.
i feed my natives either floating or sinking pellets 5 days a week and then the other day some frozen bloodworm or brime shrimp leaving them 1 day without food. then very occasionally would feed them feeders for the fun of it. but feeders are pretty expensive eg. $1 each, but if u can afford it do it as much as want. but if u feed say a few times a week they might only eat them and nothing else.

mmm i haven't had time to take any pics of my mc
but i will soon, so keep an eye out!
i'm going to be setting up a new tank for a short finned eel.
so that too!
SMCK001
5th March 2009, 05:52 PM
short finned eel that sounds kool!
cichlidboy
15th March 2009, 08:12 PM
its a bit far fetched,
but i don't think my eel is a short finned eel.
I know the long finned ones are endangered,
but my eel has MUCH bigger eyes to normal short finned ones.
THey're literally almost the size of a five cent coin.
I can't get a picture up yet.
SMCK001
15th March 2009, 11:25 PM
wow that would be awesome if u had an endangered one.
did u buy it or did u catch it?
i dont know much bout eels so i would have no idea bout the diffs, they sound like huge eyes tho.
cichlidboy
16th March 2009, 09:18 PM
well, short finned eels have tiny almost beady eyes.
unless mines a freak, it might be an indonesian or long finned eel, although the fins are too different to be a long fin.
I bought it at a seafood supplier. hes grown huge now.

well uve already done this but i been doin some research into them just now and found this:
Long finned:
Maximum size 1650 mm and 22 kg, but typically about 1000 mm and 1-2 kg. The mouth is large, extending back well past the eye. The back and sides of the body are distinctly blotched or mottled with dark brownish spots or patches. Like the Short-finned eel, the dorsal, anal and caudal fins are joined. Readily differentiated from the Short-finned eel by the spotted body pattern and length of the dorsal fin, which commences well in front of the anal fin.
Short finned: (same source as above)
The dorsal, anal and caudal fins are joined, with the dorsal fin commencing just in front of, or level with the anal fin. Usually coloured a uniform olive-green to golden-brown dorsally, with a whitish or sometimes silvery-white belly. The mouth is large with distinct and numerous teeth. The mouth is large, but unlike that of the Long-finned eel, does not extend well behind the eye, instead finishing below the eye
Different source:
Characteristics - Long-finned eels have an olive-green, heavily mottled back and sides and a silvery-white to pale yellow belly. They are the largest freshwater eel in Australia, with females growing much larger than males. Closely related and very similar to the short-finned eel, however, the dorsal fin starts much closer to the head on the long-finned eel.
sounds pretty much the same. hard to tell apart to me.

hahaha, well mine eels mouth extends behind the eye.
but its colour is just like a short finned eel.
maybe just a freak of nature that looks pretty good?

i though thats wat they might be, are they any more agressive than other natives? ive never kept them.
cichlidboy
20th March 2009, 09:47 PM
Sooties are said to be really damn aggressive.
I'm starting to see some of this aggression come out now as they grow,
I think they'll ne tanks of their own once they hit around four or five inches.
But right now, my MC is still the one to beat when it comes to tank mates.
