Hi I have a 2.5 foot tank and am wanting to get a canister filter, my aim is to eventually get a 4 foot tank so was thinking I'd try and get one now that would accommodate both.
Can anyone tell me what sort is the best or better to get and which ones I should stay away from. Cost is point but not an issue.
Thanx in advance

My first Canister Filter I bought was an Aquaone 1200. For the price it was a good filter. A Filter like this should go for about $250-$300. However it only comes with half the filter media that you will need. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing as you may want to add your own anyway.
Unfortunately my good experiences with these filters ended there as I purchased 3 more of these about 4 Months ago and all were sucking air. Including my original one. I tried replacing all the seals and even some parts but nope, problem still there. The Company sent me recently a box of the Aquaone Filter Heads. I replaced all the heads and guess what. Most if not all are still sucking air, Except not as badlyhttp://www.thefishtank.com.au/forums/images/icons/icon8.gif. So I'm not sure what's going to happen now. But this of coarse is just my experience.
I also have a JBL Canister filter 1200Lt/Hr and it seems to be made slightly better (IMO). It comes with all the Media to fill it and extra seals and is only about $50 more.
I'm looking at "investing" in an Eheim Canister Filter soon and only wish I had the money to replace all my Filter's with these guys. Eheim are renowned for their quality and depending on how much money your willing to spend this is the brand I would personally be going for. The down side to them is the prices. They are about 2-3 times the price of the ordinary Filter's. They do come with a 3 year Warranty though. But like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for!
Otherwise there are plenty of Filter's out there Mate and it's just a matter of deciding which one is for you. http://www.thefishtank.com.au/forums/images/icons/icon12.gif

Ehiem 2215 Classic with a surface skimmer attachment would be my suggestion.

I have an Aquaone 1200 running nicely atm and handful of Fluval models in various states of running.
So far in my experience the Fluvals have been my biggest disapointment. For the money the stuff should not fail.
But I know others have had differing experience's with them

people say fluvals are bad and eheims are the best.
i agree with both.
ive tried fluvals, eheims and Haileas.
Haileas are awesome for their price, but with cheap products...theres always that glitch you ahve to be prepared to work with.
Love my fluval 303
