G'day guys'

I have finally got my tank up and running, how ever i am have trouble with the water, it has this milky look about it. Not real white but just not real clear.
I have had the filter running for around a week with out my Cod in the tank. As I am worried it may cause it some harm.
Can some one please tell me what i am doing wrong. Or is this some thing that will clear up as the filter dose its job.

Rob, what have you put in the tank? substrate, rocks, plants, wood? was it all washed?
you may need some Clearwater or to rewash things if thats the cause.
what do you think guys?

Hi Dazz,
I've just got some washed small river pebbles and and old well washed piece of redgum that i had in the pond out side, as some cover for when I put the Cod in.

I have washed the pebbles twice already and the redgum was in the pond for months and the pond is as clear as.

any ideas.

Hmmm bugger i was hoping it was some sort of clay residue from the pebbles!
what sort of filter are you running? have you checked to see if its clean or full of a white substance? I once put new ceramic noodles in my filter and neglected to clean it and it made my water white.

No i have'nt yet i thought i would wait until it cleared up a bit, but if that could be whats causing the problem i guess I'll give it a go.
Thanks Dazz.

I'd be looking at your filter yes. What filter is it? Perhaps it's not big enough for that size tank if it hasn't cleared the tank up yet?

it's a Aqua Nova NCF-1000, external canister filter.
got it cheap from the bloke nest door,(brand new) his been using one for his 4' tank for months and has never had a problem.

How many litres per hour is it capacity and what sort of medium has it got in it Rob?

so thats the probles i have faced similar to your problem ..but u have no fish in it, so the things that i can think of are

maybe there is still bad bacteria left in the gravel or by any chance did u boil the water or use hot water to fill the tank up

If its the tannins from the piece of wood the best thing to do is boil it on the stove for about half a day and change the water your boiling it in every couple of hours. This is garanteed to get them all out. Just use an old pot though as you will ruin the pot! And leave the log out of the tank for a few hours after you have boiled it other wise you will boil your fish that swim near it as it becomes water logged with hot water and retains it heat for some time.

Hope that is of some help
