Hi
As you would have seen i other posts i recently bought a breeding coloney of Corydoras Sterbai.
I've never kept cory's before and i notice that they like to dart to the surface and take gulps of air.
Can someone tell me why they do this?

Hi Darren, not familiar with cats, but if they are the ones I am thinking of (I had albino ones) that were very small, they also use to do the same thing, letting out a few bubbles on their way back down.
Interested also to hear what the reason behind this is.

Hi Dazz, I too had Albino Corydoras that did the same thing, never seemed to be a problem, hopefully its just a species trait.

It is a species trait with some cats,I think it's instinctive due to the waters they originate from :)

Yeah i think its instinctive cause i've read on other sites of other peoples corys doing it.
Though they never actually said why.
Its almost like a game to them. Some times they all swim in a circle and take in turns dashing up and back down again, quite ammusing  .

hey sloory..i really dont know because i dont know th biology of the breed but im guessing its how they breathe im prety sure axolotyl's do it as well. (i think). not all fish can breathe constantly under water. that is just how it goes, but you could ask ur local shop to.

hi guys,Corys dash to the surface to breathe only when there is a lack of oxygen in the tank, they are the best fish in tanks to gauge dissolved oxygen levels because when there aint enough they head for the surface.I have three sterbai and they roam all over the tank(at all different levels)and never hit the surface .Phil.

But still if the cats were a bit iffy about the oxygen levels in the tank wouldn't it be a good idea to work a bit more oxygen into your system anyway sloory?

Thats a good question BKOM, and it begs the question , how much is enough?
I lost a full community tank full of fish whilst on holidays a few years ago because a air line somehow became disconnected, in a matter of 48 hours between my brother feeding the fish and returning 48hrs later they were all dead. I would have thought that the circulation from the outlet of the canister filter would have been enough to let the surface area of the water absorb oxygen, obviously not!
I lost thousands of dollars worth of fish in the blink of an eye.

Of coarse, but i think i had the tank overwelmed because their where so many fish in it.
Now theirs just some neons and a few shrimp in it.
The plants should provide enough on there own now.
Tonight i pick up my apisto's from the airport!!!!!
