Help! I have a purple slime problem in my tank and have been given 3 different treatment options by 3 different aquariums (Coburg, Ballarat and Geelong) so am a little confused. My tank has only been going since Christmas, and is an Aqua One setup 32L i think. I have 3 fish in it, 2 gobys (a small bright yellow one and a larger green striped one) and another fish that is quite fiesty - i forget the type but its got a pinky/purple head and yellow end half.
I noticed the slime starting approx 2 weeks ago, mostly on the side of the tank in the gravel. I called the first aquarium, who diagnosed my problem as cyanobacteria. I was told to do daily water changes for a week, so approx half of the water was eventually replaced. I also backed off feeding the fish as much. This didn't seem to do much at all. And now the slime had started to grow on other areas of the gravel, also started to grow on my plant and a patch on my live rock.

I called the second aquarium, and it was suggested that the cyano wouldn't go away by itself, and i would need to use a treatment. They suggested Anti Red, which retails for approx $90. I also called the third aquarium who said similar, however a product Polyox was suggested, which was much cheaper at $34.95 for a 230ml bottle.

I went with the Polyox option, and have been using it for 3 days now, but still have not seen any improvement. I followed the directions precisely, 2 drops twice a day, and removed the carbon filter. Does anyone know how long it should take to start working? I'm so tempted to start pulling the stringy bits of slime off my plant as it starting to cover the whole thing!! Or would i be better off cutting my losses and trying the Anti Red solution?

Hi Rachael. It definately does sound like cyano. I would personally syphon off all the cyano, and then top up your water. Probably hold off on your treatment unless it looks like it's coming back after you have siphoned off.

Out of curiosity, what water are you using for water changes? Natural Salt Water or Artificial Salt Water. If artificial, you are not using tap water are you to make it? RO is the only way!

Also, what are you using for lighting, and how many hours per day?

Hi. I ceased the treatment last Thursday night as suggested, and have tried to syphon it all off, but haven't had much luck. It has started to grow back on the gravel, and is still on my plant.

I actually use natural salt water, straight from the ocean. I started buying it from Coburg, but as i frequent the surfcoast alot i have been filling my containers and filtering it through cloth into a jug to remove any fine particles. So the tank itself would be predominantly natural salt water now.

The light is a fluro one, not sure what wattage etc as my ex set the whole thing up for me and now we aren't together i'm finding i don't know the answers to simple questions! It is only turned on for a couple hours a day, usually at night from around 6pm - 9pm. It does however get natural light during the day, but not directly on the tank.

I have actually had a loss this morning too. My green goby was very pale last night (i returned from a 4 day business trip - my house mate kept an eye on them for me tho) and he had a few white spots on him, and when i got up this morning he was dead :-(

Sounds like a pain Rachael.

What are your readings? pH, Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia and so on?
Please post them up so we can get an idea of other causes.

Keep the water changes up as frequently as possible in any case.

Thanks for all your assistance but i have lost my last two fish so not much more i can do now. I'm devastated. My test results from last night were: PH - 8.4, Alkalinity - lower half of normal (1.7 - 2.8), nitrate 5 (was 2.5 all last week tho), nitrite 0.05, ammonia 0.1. The water temperature is also a constant 25 degrees. I had nitrate problems about a month ago due to over feeding, and think the recent spike could possibly be from my house mate feeding them while i was away or perhaps the fish weren't eating much - the last two didn't swim for food last night. I usually alternate between spectrum dried food and mysis or brine shrimp, however for convenience while i was away my house mate just used the dried food for 4 days.

Might leave it all for awhile now, perhaps i'm not cut out for fish keeping with all the problems i've got. Thanks again for your help.
