Hey guys I am in the process of trying to figure out what plants I can get for my 3f community tank.
I already have some java moss that will be lurking its way about and was thinking some java fern, marble queen sword, thin val, and maybe a bit of osiris sword, I like the look or hair grass is it (not sure of ts proper name) and some bushy ish mid ground plants so I would love some suggestions, keep in mind that they will be groing in a 2-5mm substrate and I would prefer them to be rather hardy.
Oh yeah and the tank is I would say moderately lit and will stay so for some time.
Cheers,
Tim.

Hi Tim,
with substrate that thin i would think you would have to have potted plants, or plants like java fern or Anubis that aren't planted in the substrate, I have grown both with good results and no care!
My cichlids don't even touch the Anubis and my previous silver dollars(definite plant destroyers) didn't trouble the javas fern.

Hehe, I should have been a bit clearer in my original post the substrate is actually about 5 cm deep but it consists of 2-5mm sized gravel
Sorry for confusion

Tim.

G'day tim.

If you don't have a great amount of light i would stay away from the hair grass until you upgrade.
It really thrives under T5 lighting and i don't even use firts with it.

There are some affordable T5 lights on ebay here (http://stores.ebay.com.au/Aquarium-And-Accessories-Outlet_T5-Aquarium-Light-Fittings_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ3863416QQftidZ2QQt Zkm).

Do you think my single tube 2 foot T8 light will be enough to keep my plants happy untill I can get T5 lighting set up for my tank? It will be a few weeks before I can afford to by new lighting.

G'day,

i think they'll be ok for a while. they just won't grow as fast or as healthy.
