Not sure if baking soda is the same as sodium bicarbonate.
But Bicarb is used for raising ph,I'm not sure what effect it has on hardness..??

I'm no expert on the subject, but I understand that Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate) raises the carbonate hardness (KH) of the water, and therefore raises the PH due to its buffering properties. The general hardness (GH) is made up from other minerals and salts.

Hi mate using baking soda could lead you into Ph kH yoyoing.

What are you growing that you need PH9?

If you need something stable to keep ph gh kh up use some coral and marble chips.

It will keep it constantly high.

just my 2cents

ye definately if its a permanant thing use marble chip, crushed coral or crushed shell. it will buffer your hardness and it will give you a constant. less stress on your fish because they wil get the same thing every time :)
