I was thinking of starting to breed peppermints, does anyone know if they are more difficult than std bristle noses?

ye peppers are a lottle more diffucult to breed and your looking around the $400 mark for a pair. if you wanna make the transition maybe try for some orange spots first?
they are quite similar and require pretty much the same "seasonal" triggers as peps.
common b/n are like water rabits :) i dont touch mine other than feed and a few water changes and i have hundreads!!
if you feel like comming down to canberra im sure i could dig up a trio for ya :)

Hi all. I lost my Female Peppermint a couple of months ago. Just woke up and she was floating after dropping eggs. They were unfertilized. Just got them to start going again too. Although I was planning on getting rid of the Male as I believe he is a lazy Father! lol I purchased a year ago two batches (blood lines) of Peps which are nearly ready but don't have alot of tank space at the moment to separate into breeding groups. So not sure what I'm going to do as I don't have any money to buy more tanks. So I have the fish but no means of breeding them. Typical lol. I thought about making partitions and dividing a 4ft tank I have spare? Not sure if it's a good idea to try that though. Would say 2ft per pair be enough? Last pair had the whole tank. Cheers.

depends on what your ratio is. to be honest you will be better off having the 4ft set up as a colony. that way they all cycle through each other and a little competition ain gunna hurt. so long as you have plenty of caves and wood and not too many males that is.

That's a good idea canberra plec. Thanks. I wonder if I was to add two Males the rivalry might distract them from breeding? But I might give this a go when i get round to setting up this 4ft tank. I'll make sure I add what you've mentioned. Thanks for the advise mate.

no worries, the rivalrly should only effect negatively if they are too close and with not enough visual barriers between their caves. a friend of mine has had them breed in a 2x12x20, there was 3 males in there and 4 females!!! way over crowded and they still mannaged to spawn lol. but id say just under half of the space in the tank was wood not water...

Wow. That is a tight squeeze. lol Well I'm keen to try it this way but just need to organize a few things first. I'm in Cairns and temp starting to warm so am a bit concerned about this in regards to egg loss. I had this problem last year. Male would kick eggs and I'd tumble them but only takes one bad egg and fungus spreads rather quickly. I ensured good water flow but temp was about 29-30 deg cel and when the water was about 25-27 I didn't have this problem. Hopefully next time Male(s) see their job through. I know some breeders use Malachite blue if this happens. Have you ever tried this method? Does this remedy effect the Wrigglers? Thanks for any info. Cheers.

ye i regularly use methylene blue on eggs that have been kicked. it helps stop any fungus growing and slows any spread down a bit. i dont normally bother once they have hatched, just keep the water flowing in your trap and they should be fine

Thanks mate. I appreciate your responses. It's been a long time since I used remedies so even forgotten the correct names! :plol. Do you use the normal specified dosage or should I weaken it? Thanks heaps mate.:)

if they are in an egg tumbler or fry trap i just put a few large drops into it enough so the eggs go a little blue :)

Ok that's valuable information. Especially when living in a climate like Cairns. There's nothing worse than going to all the trouble of keeping and breeding them, just to finally have some success but have the end result be destroyed! Thanks again! :);)

Not sure what others think, but im not quite in cairns but it gets really hot here and has pushed my tank temp up tp as high as 32 deg cel before... I freeze a couple of 2 lt bottles of water, depending on your tank size as to how many u use and once they are frozen just let them float in the water for a couple of hours and that seems to help alot and my fish tend to like it aswell. I normally turn the light off when I put them in so as that it doesnt aid in melting it too quickly. I would love others response to this if you think its a good idea or if there is a better way:)

I do the same thing Mat i believe that alot of the other members do also, i also open the glass on top of the tank to let some heat out, at the risk of loosing fish i know but temp rises have caused me alot of deaths anyway.

hey there,
a little off the subject of breeding but it sounds like you guys kno alot about bristlenoses! i have just started getting into fish keeping and i love the bn!!!
i have two tanks set up and standards in both, but i recently brought three albinos...and they all died . i brought them at different times, one first, which died the second day i had it. and two about a month later, in a fully set up tank that has heaps of other fish and no other casulties. i introduced some standards at the same time and they are doing fine.
i was told that the albinos were the same to keep as the standards and so i did nothing special for them. was this wrong?
as soon as i saw the albinos i fell in love and have been looking at different colours and would really love to get some more but i don't kno what else i need to do to keep them alive????
any help would be appreciated!!!!:D

Not sure myself as I have had no probs what so ever with mine I done exactly the same things for my common BN as my Albino BN, but I remember my mother once bought some ABN and half of them died within 24hrs... so not sure if its a common prob
