Anyone here have any experience with the various recipes out there as an alternative to Melafix?
I nearly bought some the other day as I'm out, and decided it's too darn expensive. I'm no chemical engineer, but thought I might experiment with some alternatives.

I'll try and find you a recipe man, but I've heard mixed results...
Apparently you have to emulsify the Cajeput oil with detergent!
Cheers,
Pete.

Thanks Pete! The only bit I'm not sure about is the detergent. Perhaps there's an alternative to that we can find also (some natural type?).

Yeah, I'm looking around for a 'natural' unfragranced one to use. It is onl;y one drop though, it won't hurt at all... ;-) (I hope!)

It may be expensive but it WORKS!!!!!
I dont think i would trust myself or anyone else for that matter making up their own chemical treatments to be used on fish. Especially expensive little Africans.
I like to be confident in my products and Melafix i have found to be sensational.
If its any help I use the POND strength Melafix as it is much more concentrated than the normal stuff and you only use half doses...plus as you know i buy it in Big bottles so you save a bit that way too..

Yeah, the pond strength is good stuff, but harder to find. Not many places stock it because they don't seem to get you back in for another bottle in a week like with Melafix! ha ha!
I'm going to give it a whirl sometime, I'll let you all know how I go! ;-)
Cheers,
Pete.

Is the detergent there just to break up the tea tree oil so it disolves?

yeah i read it mate, what i was thinking was if you call a naturopath they might know of a single chemical you can get to do the same thing without using a cocktail of chemicals like what is in detergent.
Just a thought

I think you may be right. I know in the hatchery we use something ( cant for the life of me think of its name right now) with the clove oil to help break it down and dissolve it when anaesthetising the fish.
When it comes to me ill let ya know, it may work for Pete's recipe also!!!

So metho should do,just need to wrestle it from the local drunk  (j/k)
If you can get ethanol, this is as pure as it gets(100%).
Just hard to buy.

I might be able to get you some Methanol from the race boat but not ethanol,
might not work for emulsifying the mix but it will make the fish go REALLLLLY FAST!!!!!!!!!!
