Cleaning gravel with foreground plants

Thinking of getting plants like dwarf hairgrass for carpet plants, though debris might collect under or around them. Are they compatible with an undergravel filter? What is the best way of cleaning the debris around or underneath the plants and in the gravel?

Any advice or experiences appreciated.

Iv always been NOT to because it can damage the roots but if you dident damage the leaves you can siphon around the plants as i do, i really dont do this unless there is a big build up because its like mulch for the plants.:)
