Hi All check the New T5 lights out which are awesome new lights that have arrived to nearly all good aquariums everywhere.
It has got to be one of the best lights I have seen.
These light are great for all aquarium uses but it is a superb light for planted tanks and marine as it is very efficient and bright light which are recommended for these kinds of setup.

These are great, but not really new, been out for a few years at least. A reasonable number of these are apparently as good as a metal halide...

T5 is actually a diameter size which are thinner than the usual T8.
But yes thinner tubes are more effective than the fat ones.
What you really need to know about is the
1.Lumen output.(brightness)
2.Kelvin(amount)
3.The light spectrum each individual tube puts out.
Here freshwater and marine may vary quite a bit.
