Hey I was thinking of treating my partner with a sea horse, something she has always wanted but was too scared to purchase, Has anybody had any experience with these?

I used to work in a pet shop that sold them, obviously they are a bit more difficult to maintain being that they are marine.
Have you had any experience with marine fish previously?

No worries :) I suppose if its something your partner really wants, you could make sure you do a lot of research first and then have a go at keeping them. They are not too expensive and although they are more difficult than freshwater, they are not as difficult as normal marine fish and can be kept in a smaller tank.

Hi Dazz. Here are some pointers I have from a Care Sheet for Souther Knight Seahorses (temperate species): Will eat frozen foods (not dry foods)
40 litres or more - must be filtered
4 to 6 juvenile sea-horses per 40 litres but allow 50 litres per adult pair
25% water change every fortnight
Aeration is essential for oxygenation - standard air driven under gravel filters are ideal
Substrate should be shell grit or crushed coral (buffers the Ph with dissolved calcium)
Tank decorations should be added for the sea-horses to hang on to.
Do not add live corals (may sting)
Cannot compete for food so do not have any other inhabitants with them
I hope that helps ...John

do you think you could put 2 to 4 sea horses in a 2.5 to 3 foot tank or would you need a larger setup?

Given the info that Aqauriumleasing put up I'd say that a 3 ft tank given it held about 150 litres you should be able to keep 3 pairs of adult seahorses.

Hey Dazz,
Jem's here in Canberra has a seahorse display tank - I'm going down tomorrow - I'll see if I can get a couple of shots and ask them about their filter/water system.
