Kimbo]My big angel fish had white spots around its eyes. When I went to the local pet store they advised me that my fish had white spot and that I needed to start treating it straight away. I was told that I need to empty out my tank and scrub it clean. Replace all plants and take out the carbon in the filters.
I had about 25 fish in my tank with only the angel showing any signs of the spots. After I clean out the tank I put the fish back in and treated the tank with the white spot treatment that I had been given. The next day my other fish started showing sign of white spot and it has only got worse. I clean the tank out last Saturday and was told I only had to do a 75% water change only a week. Adding the white spot treatment each time I did this as well as the other water treatments like normal.
Over the past week I have lost about 13 of my fish and most of them were lost in the past two days.
Am I doing something wrong???
My fish's eye also go cloudy and they swim around the tank like they are blind and then they die within the next day. Could my fish have something other than white spot?
Also the big angle once cleaning the tank the first time got big holes in place of where the white spots had been. They seem to be closing up now and he seems himself again.

Hi sorry to hear about the problem. But here is a pic of a fish with whitespot.
Is yours looking similar?
Though I have never heard about stripping the tank as suggested to you.
It happened to me years ago, then I raised the temp, added salt and treated with an ich treatment.
Anyhow have a read and good luck.

Immediately I read your letter I started thinking that the problem could be stress - white spot bought about by stress - if it is this you may have to start looking at alternative treatments. A dose of Stress Zyme might help start the process. Someone more expert than I could help you with a complete plan to follow. Whatever the problem I wish you good luck with it.
Cheers,
Mike

the spots looked similar to this on the fish that have died. The other fish are silver sharks and all they have are the clouded over eyes. The one Barb that I have left has these white spots plus this weird bubble thing over its eyes.
I have been using the Ich treatment and it does not seem to be doing much. I turned the temp up slowly yesterday and the Barb seems to be a bit more active which is good. I have not tried salt though. I have a 160L tank how much do you think I should put in and do I need to do a 75% water change each time I put in the Ich treatment and the salt?
I will try out the stress treatment as well.
Thanks heaps for your help :)

If you could get your temp upto about 30degC it should help.
For 160 litres I would suggest 2 cups of salt (prefer rock salt if you can get it.
Don't use iodised or free running salt because of the additives.
I'm doubtful about the 75% water changes.
I would just keep them minimal until your finished treating.
Also ALWAYS make sure that the water your doing water changes with is the same temp as that in the tank.Well at least within a couple of degrees.
Ich is most commonly brought on by sudden drops in temp, usually because of water change.

I had some White Spot about a year ago which came as a surprise as nothing had changed in the tank for several months and all water parameters were fine.
I was given a couple of 'tablets' from my lfs which they apparently used with great results. Two doses later and was no better off and was a little worried especially as a couple of my Clown Loaches had it and it can be harder to treat in those fish.
Anyway what worked for me is along the lines that Joz already suggested:
1. Raise the temp to around 30 degrees
2. I added green aquarium salt (I slightly reduced the rate that was recommended as some of my fish such as Corys and Loaches don't like salt)
3. Performed a 50% water change over a couple of days and made sure that I cleaned the gravel during the process. (I also made sure that I added water that was of the same temp as the tank - very important as Joz says!)
4. I used a multipurpose medication which contains Methlylene Blue, Acriflavine and Malachite Green (don't forget to remove carbon, if you have any)
My White spot went in about three days after doing the above (much to my relief!!)
Good luck!

I'm relieved I was wrong and you could put your finger on the real problem.

ok so the white spot has gone from my tank. But I went away for a day and came back to find that the remaining fish have this thin white layer of stuff all over them. Also one of the Silver sharks is swimming around upside down and blood can be seen around its head and up through the top fin. They all look really unhappy :( do you know what this could be???

So the shark that was swimming upside down just died but the other shark is starting to show the same signs of the blood in it fins and the Angel has the white layer that sort of looks like skin that is peeling off him.
The other fish that I have in the tank that are 2 gold gourami, 1 female sword tail and three suckers seem fine and not affected at all by the white pots or what is happening now. I have taken some photos and attached them.

Now that looks abit like Oodinium to me.

Not nice to get.

Do some googling to satisfy yourself thats what you have, then perhaps find an aquarium that can help you treat it.
