Guys, I was basically wondering if there were any cichlids that could be mixed with normal tropical fish, and if so which breeds, I know most cichlids are aggressive and shouldnt be mixed but was wondering if anyone had mixed with success?

Hey!

my sister has a 4ft setup (up and running for four years). in it she has two silver sharks and two cichlids, they seem fine together, yes they are a little agressive but after four year they've figured out their ends of the tank...she was told at the aquarium that aslong as she had fair numbers of both they are fine together! (meaning if one dies replace immediately otherwise the bullying will begin!) goodluck!

Hi sub,
just research your water conditions and I'm sure you will find suitable fishes , i have kept plecos and bristle nose cats , clown loaches and silver sharks , silver dollars , upside down catfish, red tailed black sharks anything bigger than my cichlids mouths! I have electric yellows and blues , acei etc so thats my 20c worth!

Hi Sub

I've had south american cichlids (including dwarf cichlids, rams, angels, festivums, severums, acaras, etc) with tropicals for years , no probs, except for a few small neon tetras that got eaten :( . But generally, provided the tropicals are large enough not to be mistaken for feeder fish, you should be OK.

The festivums and severums will eat your plants, if you have a planted aquarium!!! :(

I can't comment on african cichlids as I've never kept them.

Good luck, let us know how you go.

Cheers

Blue rams are an excellent addition to your community tank in my opinion.
They are fairly peacefull (all of the ones i've had were anyway) and they add some awesome colour to.
They also show some great personality  .

hey Daz , would the blue rams get big enough to eat neons? i think they would look awsome with neons.

G'day DAZZ

No, i think they only get to be about 2 - 2.5 inches.
I have not heard of this happening.

ive got a blue ram in the tank already, very peaceful fish, very good looking, hopeing some colour enhancing food will bring his colour out more. I was wondering if I could add an electric yellow or a Melanochromis Johanni prehaps.

You won't have the right water parameters.

I would suggest trying out other types of dwarf cichlids if you want more than just rams.

Yep Most Sth Americans can live with little tetras and stuff its fine but don't put any large ones with them unless its discus or any tetras that fish in your cichlid mouth...s

My 6 foot aquarium has a pair of oscars at around 250 to 260 mm with 6 silver dollars 2 plecos, 2clown loaches, 2 tandanus catfish and 4 bristlenose catfish. Not too many arguments. The silver dollars stick together in a school and are quick enough to get out of the way. Oscars leave the bottom dwellers alone most of the time.

hey guys, just a quick question- have researched this but i thought id double check!!!

blue rams/golden rams and bolivian butterflys are all good with danios, tetras and clown loaches?

from what ive read they are good community fish and will be fine as long as they have lots of plants and some where to hide???

thanks for any suggestions!!! including other dwarf cichlids you think are impressive!!!
