View Full Version : Tank Cycling?

Hey everyone,

This is my first post! Just got my first tank that came in a package pretty cheap and I always wanted to keep fish. It's 70L and came with a 280L/Hr filter that hangs over the edge of the tank so that the filter water falls into the tank water and a light...
I've been doing some reading about tank cycling and was wondering if this was a good start...

I set up the tank with sand/gravel, a nice big rock and some fake plants. Filled it with water and got everything running and functioning. I got a pair of stockings and cut off the foot part and put a couple of pinches of floating pellets in there and tied a knot in the end. I also put some gravel in there to help it sink. Is this good enough for a source of ammonia? How long should I wait to see an ammonia increase? After a few days, eveything is still reading 0 (ammonia, nitrites and nitrates). I understand that the process can take 6-8 weeks but was wondering what the expected time is to see the various levels increase/decrease.

Another thing.... Should i have live plants in there and are they hard to maintain? What benefits and disadvantages are there in having live plants?

Sorry for all the questions :o and thank you in advanced to all your help!
