It's been a while coming, and I've always wanted Zaire's so I finally purchased 5 small Zaire's yesterday.

Here's to building the colony over time and possibly breeding in a couple of years time! Haha

Will get some pics tonight.

awesome stuff Marc. Saw some really nice blue Zaire's at subscape yesterday and they were taken in a jiffy!

I haven't got any african tanks myself but if i was to convert, frontosas would be the go :)

I'm so jealous!!

In 4-6 months i'm going to purchase 6 wildcaught Mpimbwe frontosa. I can't wait!

I finally got my 6x2x2 on the cabnet in my room so i'll cycle it soon.

G'day Darren, where are you planning to get the Mpimbwe's from? There's a definate demand in Aus, and a lack of supply! :)

An uninspired update on this. Fish settled in, were all actively feeding in an established, cycled (well filtered) tank.

Three days later, found one dead in the morning. No apparent causes obvious. The following day one more.

Sent them to Fullboar's tank where he has been raising some also, one more died and the remaining two seem OK.

It's a puzzle. I now have other fish in that same tank which are more than happy and settled. Strange!

I think I'll stick to mature Zaire's for the future! :(

No good young fella :( very sad to hear that.

If you have another one cark it, bring it up to my place in a water sample from your tank and we'll do an autopsy on it and see if we cant find anything under the scope

dont want those little expensive babies turning their toes up on you....

cheers
Jules

It has to be the water, I pick up 5 the same time Marc did. We put them all in the same box, got home, and split them up. I have my new Zaire in the same tank as my other 6 Zaire and all are doing well. Marc's Zaire, now my Zaire :) are doing good. I found one dead 7 hours after I put them in my tank. I would say it was going to die anyway from what very it is that killed the others. I have them in another tank to my Zaire but will toss them all in together this weekend.

You could see the gills on Marc's Zaire had a redist look to the gill plate as if the gills had be stressed, which makes you think the water may be the problem.

Sunbury water is no good for aquarium fish. But I know alot of people using it and kind of getting away with it. I just dont know, anyway, now I have more Zaires :)

That's sucks Marc, normally fronnies are tough, what other fish you have with them? fronnies are pretty laid back and dont want fast moving tankmates. How big are they anyway? I am getting some wildcaught Moba soon, will start with a trio first then slowly build up the colony, I dont like to wait for 2 years before I can breed them. :)

Thats the thing, Marc's has Fronnies, he's had them for sometime now and they are doing fine.

I have a w/c colony of Burundi's, as well as another dozen Burundi's I grew up from fry, all are exceptional.

It's strange. I have no doubt it's Sunbury water, even though pH was stable at 8.2 - 8.4, and no recordable traces of ammonia etc, hardness 350ppm (don't know gH).

Maybe the Zaire's are just too precious as fry. The breeder has good water, and fullboar is on rain water, so it only leaves Sunbury water (even after being distilled etc).

Live and learn. I'm focusing back on breeding Burundi's now until I can get my hands on Mpimbwe, or Mobas as adults.

How big is your Zaire Marc? I bought 2 F1 Moba today and they are about 9cm.

They are no longer Marc's  . The ones I got from Marc are around 1". I have 13 Zaire's with the biggest around 10-11cm. I'm looking for Moba's now. I picked up 5 Moba's @ 5cm from QLD a few weeks ago. I only had one tank running and they did get along with my Zaire, so I on sold them a week or two later. I'm hoping to order some WC Moba's before the end of this year. Just need to work out the finer details ($$$)

I am a bit confuse about your post Fullboar, when you say Zaire's, do you mean Kapampa, Kitumba or Moba? Or are they old school Zaire's?

Cool, maybe a photo would be nice. The guy who I bought my Moba from have Kapampa trio, big fish but he is keeping them in a normal four footer, so breeding would be impossible. he paid $600 each for them. Very nice fish.

Hi Marc

I dont know but is he really sure those are kitumba? Moba and Kitumba is almost similar in appearance, even expert in the states is having difficulty in distinguishing them specially juveniles. I know he wants Moba that is why he is selling most of his gear, maybe, only maybe those ones he is selling are actually Moba. Has he seen the parents of those fish?

Marc

They are 100% guaranteed Kitumba's. The colony (parents) have been bought which is the sole reason the smaller fish are being sold (fry).
The same person also has a breeding colony of Moba's also.
