u can get blood worms / brine shrimp / cichlid cubes witch are very balanced they include veg in them as well
ive never fed a gold fish any of these before but i cant see the harm by trying just make sure u give them a balanced diet
maybe feed blood worm 1 night and next night do flakes
btw theres nothing wrong with flake food if you dont buy the cheap nasty crap
the cheap crap normaly is dirty i found and cloud water up fast and easy
but you also dont need the top of the range stuff ether
just find 1 that your fish loves and when you read back of label make sure your happy with it as well

goldies need veggies. mine go crazy for zucchini. steam it up like you would for yourself, cut to size and plop it in. mine eat the lot, skin, seeds and flesh, but i know some people strip the seeds and peel them first...
i also swap between frozen blood worms, frozen brine shrimp and live brine shrimp (coz its fun to watch them chase them all over the tank. i have a 6 footer :))
but xDCxSMOKE is right, you have to have a good quality flake food.
how big are the fish and what type of goldfish do you have?

I just have small schubumkins (dont know how to spell it sorry). I also keep guppies, I just feed them tropical flakes.
