First of all, sorry about the rhyme...

On topic, I have heard a lot about the ADA range of souls and substrates, and the results they give.

I am in the process of ordering all the hardware for my new tank, and I need to make up my mind regarding the substrate...

I have worked out that i will need roughly 200L of substrate, and the ADA is going to cost one hell of a sum of money to use...

Is there anything wrong with using a base fert. such as laterite, and then using a fine (1-2mm) black gravel on top, coupled with quality liquid ferts?

I have seen awesome looking tanks done from both, but there doesnt seem to be a difinitive answer... From what I can gather, the ADA range is perfect if you wish to grow a dense carpet of say Glosso, which wont root well in a gravel substrate...

If someone could help me shed some light on this, and also suggest options for me, I would be appreciative.

Thanks in advance,

Luke.

If you can find "Black Earth", I would recommend that to you. It's cheaper than ADA, and more nutrients for plants. I have no idea if this type of soil is available in Australia or not. ^^

Or if you like the cheapest idea = use clay!!
