Hey guys,
I have recently bought another fish tank for my bedroom. I was just wondering if anyone knows of a quiet filter, I mean really quiet! The Tank is 30"x12"x18". Ive got a cheap filter in it at the moment, but it is just too loud at night!
Does anyone else have tanks in there bedrooms? is your filter quiet?
Thanks

I find canisters to be the quietest, my ehiem canister is silent yet my ehiem internal power filter is noisy

I've got a 3ft tank in the bedroom right next to the bed with a new Fluval 304 (I think) and it's silent.

Even the FX5 is virtually silent in its cabinet.

I've always found Eheim canisters really noisy! My Otto and even the cheap Aqua One are quieter than my old 2215 Eheim!!!

I'd be going fo a canister too! Have you cecked out Age of Aquariums? CHEAP! ;-)

i dont know this for sure but it seems that most internal filters are noisy....and yes cannisters are very silent.....im just wondering whether a fluval internal would be quiet

My 3ft is right next to my bed with a fluval 205 running.
I can't hear it at all! (or is that just the industrial deafness???)

As others have said, a canister would be the quietest thing. I have an Eheim 2217 on one of my tanks at home and it is very quiet, provided you have the spray bar beneath the water. I suppose it will all depend on what you are using for air supply on the tank. If you don't have any airstones, you would need to use your internal or external filter to break the surface of the water and therefore it would be very noisy. If you have airstones and don't need to rely on the filter to break the surface of the water, an internal Fluval would be quiet, as would an external canister.

I really like the sound of a spraybar gently breaking the surface of the water, but I HATE the grinding hum of a noisy impellar!

Ok thanks guys,
Thats what i thought the cannister will be quieter than internal.
Looks like ill be getting a cannister when i get some funds........Either the Eheim 2213 or fluval equivelant, Just got fish today, hopefully get some money back with tax return!! and then fiter and light.
Thanks again guys.

Hi everyone.

Some really good suggestions made here.

Just thought I'd add a feww more considerations:

- New cannister Filters are certainly one of the quietest filter around. Just keep in mond that now matter how quiet they are, there will still be some noise comming from the motor. This noise will get louder over time as the impeller wears down, so it's important to replace the impeller whenever necessary.

I highly recommend the Fluval range of cannisters, and the 205 or 305 model would be great for your tank!

- Noise levels can be controlled by how the filter is set up in the tank. As mentioned, If you have a spraybar above the waterline, then you'll hear the water contant movement of the water.

If you have an airstone - then the bubbles generated are sometimes louder than the actual filter!

- Even noisy external cannister filters or air pumps can be made more quite by placing them in a cabinet.
