Silver Sharks

hey guys,

i have always known that silver sharks tend to get the spooks from other fish and movement around their tank and have seen some jump entirely out of a tank because of this- however the other day one of my (my b/fs') silver sharks got spooked and literally stunned himself for several minute floating on his side and eventually getting caught on an ornament and tearing his eye which now bulges immensely and is blood red! now this is really distressing for me!! i have seen it many a times before in others tanks and i was told at the LFS that this was just characteristic of these fish- i was wondering if anyone else has had this happened to them with silver sharks and if they found any sort of solution to calming them down a bit as i am considering giving them away... :(

How big is your tank? The first silver shark I ever bought was in a 4ft tank and was very calm and happy. Lived to a ripe old age and grew quite large. The next one I bought I had in a 2ft tank when it was small, with the intention of upgrading as it got bigger. It began to get restless in the small talk but when I transferred it to the larger one it was still constantly pacing and after 4 weeks in the large tank i came home to find it had jumped out. It was still only about 4cm long, so maybe a difference of character but I'm not sure. (I still get quite upset when I think about fish that have died due to what I feel could have been my inexperience or bad judgement! :( )

Hi Amber,

the tank where the incident happened is two foot, the other tank that i have seen it in is 4 ft, unfortuanately my little guy died two days ago...he was ok and eating after it all happened but he sort of swam on a slight angle and yea, the other night it was no good! unfortunately it has turned me off these guys, i think they are great fish but i guess way too many bad experiences!!! thanks for your reply!

was wondering if anyone would know how scarring appears on fish?

i have seen tears in fins and loss of scales- especially amongst silver sharks...can they also scar?
