Do I put water in it? But seriously, I'm new to the forum, my name is Andrew and I'm from Brisbane. I have bought a second hand fish tank. It came with a Fluval something or other canister filter, an air pump, a light (not uv, I don't think) and some dodgy, ugly gravel. I am going to buy a heater tomorrow and I am going to replace the filter sponges and stuff. My first question. If I use the old filter and air pump, do I run the risk of diseasing my fish? That is assuming the previous owner had diseased fish... I really have no idea what he was keeping In the tank. Next question... Wait, the tank is 4ft and it hold 250 litres I believe. As I was saying. My next question. What kind of fish should I get? I used to have neons and bristle nose in a 2ft tank about 5 years ago so I don't want to get the same old fish. I don't want guppies, tetras, plattys or such because they are so "mainstream". I like the look of cichlids, I think they are what I am after however I kinda want something that I can feed livies. I absolutely lo e the Jack Dempseys, however, it seems as though they can't really be kept with anything else because they are so aggressive. I don't think I want to do a planted tank but it is still an option. I know I have basically eliminated every fish from the list of possibilities and I know this post is ridiculously long, but PLEASE! Please help me.
