Welcome to the forum! Lovely tanks, how hard is it to look after turtles? Do they grow really big like the huge ones you see on TV and live forever or are these a different type? I heard that a turtle that Charles Darwin used to own died recently in Queensland at Steve Irwin's zoo...

I believe this turtle will grow to about dinner plate size

They are pretty messy and destructive, i feed him in a bucket so the water is easier to keep clean.

He loves to pull the plants out the ground, heater off the wall and dig the gravel up http://www.thefishtank.com.au/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

Dinner plate size heh? I had turtle soup once.. Actually tasted bad, would never eat it again, most are endangered and it wasn't a wise thing to do. Does he come out of the tank to walk around? Or do they ahve to stay in / near water all the time? It would be cool to have him walking around the house but he may destroy stuff...

Have let him out a few times but gets spooked and could hurt himself.

I think what you have there is a Murray river Short neck tortoise, I had one a few years ago but he went with the ex in the settlement! LOL

I let mine stretch his legs in the bath whenever i could, nothing to hurt himself on in there.
Do you use a calcium block for his shell? ( i think it was calcium but it was a few years ago now!) you just drop it in the water and it is absorbed into his shell.

I got mine about 20 years ago now and hes still alive, he was small enough to put into a 2 litre milk bottle when i got him, through the screw top!

It was the best thing to see him in his tank which he shared with 6 goldfish about Cm long, he would grab hold of their tails when they weren't watching and hold on till they shook him loose, swimming flat out around the tank!

I wish i got it on video, reckon i would have won the major prize on Funniest Home Videos!!
