Following on from my introduction thread. The g/f and I have recently purchased a 120L tank and am now in the process of deciding what fish to get.
The tank itself is a tropical setup which is easy to do in Darwin. We are only using artificial plants as we are only new and would like to only worry about the fish at this stage. The tank has all the good bits like filter and lights built in. I'm not sure if it makes a difference but the tank is in the shape of a semi circle which is sitting in the louge area against a wall with no direct sunlight near it.
I have done a little bit of looking and reading on www.livefish.com.au (http://www.livefish.com.au) and have come up with this list:-
- Clown Loaches (4 or 5)
- Cardinal Tetra + Neon Tetra (would like to mix the two, maybe 6 of each?)
- Platy (3-4)
- Bristlenose Catfish (how many?)
- Ghost Knives (was thinking maybe 1 or 2?)
Others we would love but aren't sure if they are suitable are:-
- Glass Shrimp (only want a few for the novelty)
- African Cichlid (the ones with the glowy colors)
Undecided:-
- Guppies (they look nice but the one we have irritates the others in another tank we have, very active though, are they all like this?)</span>
[/i]
Anyone have any recommendations or advice? Would like to have a set list by the end of the week so we can go out and buy buy buy :)

Sounds like a good selection to me, I would stay away from the cichlids as the water requirements for them is totally different to the other species you have selected and they will grow big enough to eat the neons , I haven't kept ghost knives so i cant comment on them but the glass shrimp are a good feature and keep the algae down. I always like to keep at least 2 of each species but thats just me i guess, 1 female and one male in the hope that they will breed!
as for the guppies i have lot of them now as they breed so well and don't have any trouble with them irritating other fish at all.
hope this helps

hi mate yeah i think thats a great selection of fish to start off with.i have a 15o l tank nd thats pretty much what i have as well but i for now would only go with 1 ghost knife..only if you dont have addequate hiding space as the may get territorial but that may not be a problem and also if you are going to get 2 make sure they are both babiew hwen u get them i would personally go with 4 clowns 12 tetras all together 1 or two g knifes 2 or glass cats and get 2 bristle noses ..and make sure they are only small as well not anything to worry about its just that when they are big they can some times seem to become very lazy thats all. yeah sounds good. dont go chichlids . if u want nice coloured fish. get a discus instead but again add him last and make sure its small coz they will get aggressive if they are big and you throw them into and unknow enviroment they will start eating the neons...yes it will get big but it will know that the food is going to be coming from u and thats the tetras arnt food for them
hope that helped

Thanks for the excellent advice. We are currently doing this at the moment.
Start of the week we had...
6 neon tetra
2 cardinal tetra
then during the week we slowly added...
5 platy
3 molly
5 guppies
They all seem very happy together and are great to watch :) I think one of our balloon molly is pregnant as she seems to want to hide alot and is very very fat (even for a balloon molly) and she seems to have this stuff always coming out of her and the other fish tend to follow her around.
Will soon be adding 4 more cardinals and two cat fish, apparently I may not be able to get the bristenose ones here in Darwin as they may be illegal. I have been advised the cory's would be good. So will check that out this weekend.
I'm reconsidering the Ghost Knives now as apparently he is very aggressive and territorial. Then again which large fishies aren't right? I think the girlfriend wants to go with 2 Angel Fish and we are going to take all the advice and start with small ones.
I'm already considering another tank for a different kind of setup :D I love the marine look.

marines are awesome but can be rather expensive so be ware other than that they are more work ppl will tell you ..but really they are not to put them together there is a bit more work because there is mire components but other than that its probally less work if you get thew right filter.

Ghost knives grow VERY large and IMO would be unsuitable for a tank that size, irrelevant of any agression issues, the size would be the problem.
