The Fish Vet – Dr. Richmond Loh
Fish Welfare – A topic currently being hotly debated internationally is gradually making news in Australia. This concerns the ethics towards and the welfare of fishes. In the UK, the Liverpool City Council has placed a ban on goldfish being offered as prizes at fun fairs. The Animal Welfare Bill in the UK increases the minimum age (from 12 to 16 years old) at which a child may buy an animal without a parent being present. In Rome, the authorities ban goldfish being kept in little fish bowls. They consider this is ‘cruel’. Currently, the Australian Government, through the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) is consulting with stakeholders in the aquarium industry on this issue.
