gday guys iv just got a second hand tank setup which came with a ehiem classic external filter. I could not get it to work so took it to my local aquarium who assured me that it was working fine and I wasent priming it properly. Now I think iv primed it properly but not sure its it working properly becuause as soon as I lift the spray bar out of the water it seems to stop and air goes downs the line. Are the spray bars ment to be underwater how can I test to see if the filter is acually working?
thanks for my silly questions

can anyone help me. Iv tryed re priming it today the filter went silent so there was no air in there but again as soon as I lift the spray bar out of the water air would just go down the intake tube. bloody pos filter. Also while priming when I take off outlet tube and put it too ground level such on it water rushes out as soon as I turn the pump on it down to a dribble whats wrong with it?

Be patient, there's not a lot of people here now. I think this place iws a bit like a mining town that once had a boom, there were plenty of people around town a few years ago, but now the only people really left are the old guy drinking rum out of a bottle labelled XXX and the guy that runs a general store with the barber shop out the back.
As to your problem, i take it you've gone and filled the cannister with water, there may still be a heap of air left captive inside the pump part of the filter. I ended up squeezing lifting and lowering the outlet line on my tank to get the bubbles out of there and i was actually a bit surprised at just how much air ended up coming out of there. Even with the filter canister filled to the top with water i still managed to get enough air out to almost fill a 600ml drink bottle.
As to your question about the spray bar, the bar is intended to go above the water and spray into the water to provide the aeration that the tank needs for the occupants. To me it sounds like there is something amiss there, have you tried just running the outlet hose without the spray bar connected? does water still pump out?
Lastly a realllllly dumb question, you haven't hooked the inlet & outlet lines on the pump up back to front, have you? because that's the only other possibility i can think of as there is no way that air should be able to ever make it's way into the spray bar, there should be just too much water pressure there.
