Thanks, they are pretty peacefull even with each other (mostly displaying and chasing) and generally ignore other species unless they are small enough to be food or big enough to be a threat, they get to 8-9cm or so, dominant males will guard a faveourite spot (they like caves) These are wild caught locally but are as common as mud and should be everywhere (though I've never seen any for sale, they wouldn't show any colour in a crowded shop tank) but are easily trapped in those collapsable bait traps, hell even an unbated trap will catch them if you leave it in overnight (they think it's a big cave and take up residence)
http://www.nativefish.asn.au/fhgudgeon.html is the closest thing I could find, it may be them.
They are as tough as nails, they can survive being almost dry after jumping out (which they are very good at) and can survive even the very cold snaps that killed a lot of barra in some of the dams around here this winter, they'll be the last thing to die.

I agree with Silkieboy. They look like empire gudgeon Hypseleotris compressa. A common species that inhabit costal rivers from the Pilbra and from the Kimberley around the northern coast and down as far as the Towamba River in NSW. They are also found in New Guinea.
