View Full Version : Canister Filter Backups

We've mentioned in a few threads around here now about having a spare backup canister for when one fails. Well sure enough it happened to me last night.
A Fluval 305 only purchased ~ 6 weeks ago decided to pack up while we were out. Fortunately we weren't gone long and along with Sponge Filters and air stones there was no damage done and fish were OK. I quickly swapped out the 305 for a 403 that I had spare and we're up and running again.
Did I mention I dropped and broke a Eheim Classic (also spare) 2216 in the process....
so the tally is 1 x Eheim and 1 x Fluval dead in the space of half hour! http://www.thefishtank.com.au/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Oh dear!
So a warranty claim is it?
But I'm sure replacement tubs for Eheim are available for a tidy sum though,at least all is not lost.
Be careful when putting new filters in, because of the initial run in period may cause lots of chemical damage to your fish.Though this should be fine with some mature sponge filters in place

Thanks Joz. Yeah I always carry over noodles and filter wool when setting up new canisters etc. http://www.thefishtank.com.au/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
Haven't priced a new tub for the Eheim yet. Might float around online and have a look.
But the Fluval will be a warranty ... just have to dig up the receipt!

Must remeber that live bacteria in a cannister dies quickly.(how quick ?? http://www.thefishtank.com.au/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif )So if in doubt wash it out,and start afresh.

When we cracked out Eheim Pro tub, it was about $180- for a new one, a lot for basically a plastic container. but Eheim aren't ever cheap, at least you should be able to get the part unlike a lot of the cheaper stuff where parts don't exisit! Don't even try and repair it, the canisters are under pressure and will invariably leak..

I priced it on the net at around $100 for a replacement. Not worth the price IMO when a new one is not much more... :(

Wow!it's hard to believe that they could charge so much for a peice of plastic.
May aswell hang onto the good bit for spares if you have another cannister the same.

I may hate myself for this - but ... if following a true disaster you are REALLY REALLY stuck for a filter, heater. etc AFTER HOURS (after you have tried everywhere and all friends and enemies too), you can contact me if you are prepared to travel to Melton (Melbourne). I am not a shop but usually carry spare equipment for our rental and servicing business.
Admin - I am new to these forums - should I devulge contact details?

That's a generous offer that I am sure TFT members will appreciate. Perhaps best for you if they contact you via the Private Message system for contact details. You don't want just anyone contacting you about this sort of thing! :)
