Hi,

Does anyone know what species is sold as "glass shrimp" here in AU, or could it be any of several?

I've just bought 3 for my tank from the local pet shop. They are funny to watch, and I am hoping they will act as a cleanup crew for the bottom. Do they really eat algae, as the shop assistant told me, or is that a myth?

Thanks :)

Helen

Hi Helen, I buy mine from Livefish.com.au and they are sold as Algae eating glass shrimp.
i have 40 in my tank and they do work heaps but my tank is in front of a window so they have their work ahead of them!
can i ask how much you paid for them from the LFS?

I paid $2.50 each from my LFS. More than livefish.com.au, I know (and knew at the time), but for only 3 and now I know that a) the goldfish don't eat them and b) they can move from their heated discus tank to my unheated tank without immediately keeling over, I am happy enough. Might get more in the future, though, especially when I get my larger tank set up. I'd order them in bunches of 10 from livefish.com.au, in the future, I reckon.

How large are yours? I have one that is about 3.5cm long, and the other two are much smaller - about 1.5cm. Do yours grow? Do they breed?

Thanks!

Helen

Hi Helen, mine are about 3 cm and i have got a few females in berry , but i would assume the fish would eat the young fairly quickly!
I bought mine by the 50 and divided some off for sharkybubba (another TFT member), then we split the delivery cost so we both benefited. I think they were like 65 cents each wen u buy 50.
My LFS wanted $4.50 each so it was a no brainer to get them from livefish.com.au
