Hi there. I've just discovered this site and it's great that it's Australian!

My son gave me his Aqua One AR380 tank (33 litres)and I have the bug. I intend to set up another tank as soon as I can find a suitable strong table to take the weight of my disused old style tank which is in storage.

When I fist set up my tank I ran it for over a week without any livestock, just with the plants, before introducing platy's. Had a bad run, as one of the first fish I bought was displaying signs of fungul infection within hours of purchase and I had to treat the water. Got him back on track and introduced a couple of new fish, one of which had whitespot within a day of introducing it to the tank. This resulted in more medication added to the water. Had quite a few bereavements, but persisted. Eventually, when the survivors seemed healthy, I added new fish. All has been well for about 3 months.

I think I made a mistake in becoming smitten by the colours of guppy as they are breeding like rabbits. I have babies of all sizes. My one surviving male platy has managed to reproduce two copies of himself, however I am a bit puzzled about this as the female platy died a few months ago and the mini-platy's appeared well after that. Can platy and guppy cross? Told you I'm a novice!

The plants I have are thriving (don't know what they are called) and I regularly do a 10% water change and check the ph levels. Recently (since the latest babies arrived) the water has tested 6.2 to 6.4 and I have put some upper powder in to gradually correct this each time. Our mains water is highly alkaline, so this helps to rectify the ph balance. I regularly wash out the filter wool and foam. I am aware that my tank is not going to be able to house all of these fish in the future, but I will have to wait for the babies to grow a bit more before being able to transfer them to another.

Have ranted for long enough - look forward to participating in this forum.

Hi Curls

Welcome to thefishtank!!

Yes you're right, platies and guppies prefer slightly alkaline water, so raising the pH gradually is desirable for your setup.

I'd suggest adding some crushed oyster shell (or similar crushed shell) in an old nylon stocking or so to the tank to assist in raising the pH. If you can add the shell to your filter easily this would speed things up.

Once your pH is around 7.3 or so, you may be able to get away with just having one or two (real) shells on the substrate of your tank somewhere, to maintain the pH level.

Anyway, let us know how you go.

Cheers

Thanks for your welcome Wombat1100, joz and Go-Guppy.

Oysters come from the sea and my tank is freshwater tropical, would there be salt in the oyster shells and would that be a problem in freshwater? Does anybody know what's in the ph up and ph down powder? I tried to look it up and couldn't find anything out.

I have 2 large outside ponds containing goldfish and their water is very alkaline any suggestions for correcting this in an economical way? Buying those small containers of powder would be very cost prohibitive. The fish seem to be surviving, but I'm sure they'd be happier if the conditions were more suitable. One pond is in the shade and has a gentle waterfall and is absolutely clear and has a water lily trying to survive. The other is in full sun, has 2 water plants just introduced, has no water circulation and is quite green. I have changed the water in the latter pond a few times in the past. Being in full sun is probably the problem there.

A couple of shells is no issue at all.
The powder (ph up) is just bi-carbonate of soda, cheaper from the supermarket.

Or you could drop in the odd calcium carbonate tablet from the health store, samething.

Thanks Joz. I suspected it was bi-carb of soda, but wasn't sure. I should have dropped some into vinegar to test it out.

Looks like I got ripped off. I won't be buying it from the pet shop again!

I have access to cuttlefish shells. Do you think they would be OK if I made sure I soaked them in fresh water for a while before introducing a piece into the tank?

Any ideas on what ph down is?
