Hi all,

I'm setting up a 6ft x 2ft x 2ft aquarium that will have real plants, tropical fish, yabbies and 2 water monitors (goannas) in it. What filter would be best for this set up? I was previously told by a sale assistant to get a biological filter but was wondering what other people thought.

Cheers!

Hi there :)

Google 'how to fishlessly cycle an aquarium', because you'll need to do that ;) It's easier than cycling it with fish and a lot less stressful. I would get a canister filter if I were you, but it's really just your preference. All filters can act as a biological filter if you put biological filter media in them. Even if you don't, there are still places for the bacteria to colonise. But it's better to have at least some biological media in there.

in a canister filter, yuo usually have a coarse sponge, a semi-fine sponge and then your bio media. I wouldn't recommend carbon. Itd take too long to explain why, so just google 'carbon in the aquarium' :)

good luck matey :D I'd also be careful and find pout if the yabbies will eat your goannas or visa versa. I had a friend who put a yabbie into his tank and it ate his fish (they werre guppies).
