Normaly a quick sharp blow to the head, piercing into the brain.

When a fish is sick, why not try and help him get better

Hi Jonnie, some fish get sick way beyond help, i wouldn't kill a fish B4 trying to make him better, but there are times when u have to say this is cruel, the fish is not well , not getting better and or in pain if thats possible!
@ 33elonora, yes thats what i have heard and thats the method i would use if in that situation, unless someone gave me a better idea?

I generally mix cold water with lots of ice then a few teaspoons of salt, this brings the water temp down to well below zero, I think as low as minus ten or so. The fish I euthanise are normally on their last legs so this I believe puts them out of their misery quickly.

I was suggested by a vet to do the freezer thing if I couldn't bring myself to to snip through the brain with very sharp scissors  .
Not a pleasant thing to do either way.

an overdose of anaesthetic, usually clove oil is the best
followed by ike-jimma also known as a fish spike thru the brain.

I was just reading a book called Tropical Fish Lopaedia printed in 2000

It has a chapter on fish euthanasia. Its recommendations are as follows.

Acceptable methods are:

Anaesthetic overdose,

Concussion, with destruction of the brain,

Decapitation, with destruction of the brain,

Predation, but never done with a sick or diseased fish,

Unacceptable methods are:

Flushing,

Suffocation,

Dropping a live fish in boiling or ice water,

Slow chilling,

If anyone would like an expansion on the above topics then point out which one and I'll put it up. Warning though, I'm very slow at typing so it will not be an instant response.

Cheers

I'm an old fisherman so I tend towards a direct, physical approach to dispatching fish. (years of bleeding out and gutting food fish tends to de-sensitize you to the messier side of the hobby)

We used to use a thing called a "priest" when i was fishing, a 30mm brass ball mounted on a timber handle, one quick blow right between the eyes and they are dead.
Maybe I can get a teeny weeny one made to euthanize my guppies!!!
