As you now know from my intro, I work retail sometimes and working retail is oh so fun at times.

Here is just one of the funny things heard in the Aquarium store.

Customer: this heater I bought here last week is not working (wave's heater at shop assistant), I want my money back.

Shop: I'm sorry to hear that. May I ask in what way is it not working?

Customer: the light doesn't come on.

Shop: OK??? what temp did you have the heater set at? And what temp is your fishtank at?( mid summer in QLD)

Customer: I set the dial to 25 degrees and the tank is at 30 degrees. I had it in there all weekend and the tank is still at 30 degrees.

Shop: I see, (tries to not laugh and maintain professional outward appearance) the light wouldn't come on in those circumstances. This is a heater NOT a cooler.

Then followed buy a long winded explanation about how the thermostat works in a heater.

Customer: OH!?!

Customer's wife in the background: I told you that's how it worked.

Customer sheepishly paid for the new purchases they had picked up while bringing the faulty heater back, and takes the heater away to keep the tank warm next winter, followed by his wife who exchanges a knowing smile with the shop assistant.

Moral to this is Guys sometimes our wives are right, and maybe read the instructions at least once.

The scary thing is, this has happened a number of times. And as much as I'd hate to say it, never by a woman.

Does anyone else have any of these type of stories to tell?

lol, I've heard that plenty of times too :p
Here's another one that I hear from time to time:

Customer: I bought 3 Seahorses on the weekend, and they all died by the next morning.
Staff: That's no good, did you bring a sample of water with you?
Customer: Yes, yes, here it is! (all 10mL of it)
- Staff member starts testing what little water there is, logically starting at pH, while the customer continues to mumble about how they want a refund or their horses replaced -
- The pH is 7.2 -
Staff: Well the pH of your tank is 7.2 when it's supposed to be up around 8.2 - 8.4, are you sure you have a saltwater tank?
Customer: Yes, it's cold water!
Staff: Yes, but is it salt water, as in SEAhorse?
Customer: No, it's just cold water from the tap! (Starting to turn red with ire)
Staff: ...
Staff: Do you realise that Seahorses are from the ocean, and that they will not live in freshwater?
Customer: But I changed all the water before I put them in!
- Lengthy explaination about the difference between salt and fresh water by the staff member -
Customer: Well I saw the goldfish picking at them, I still think that's what caused it...
Staff: I'm sorry, I can't help you.

You would be amazed at how often that used to happen...

A mate of mine has a small fish tank (20litres) all his fish died. he bought more and they all died. I decided to help him out so I went over. He saw my gravel cleaner and said whats that?. I pulled the top of his Hob filter. Completely filthy. I asked when was the last time he changed the cartridge.... a blank stare came over his face. Not since he bought it a year ago. I asked when' was the last time he did a water change?
A; never he just topped it up with straight tap water, no water ager.
I tested his water and told him his fish would do better in his toilet.

Well my Mate owns a LFS in Cairns and had a batch of small plastic baby Crocs for sale say about 2" long. At the entrance he advertised $1.50 FOR BABY CROC! ONLY ONE LEFT! My friend had just finished telling me that I wouldn't believe the amount of people that entered to enquire about the Baby Crocs for sale. About 5 mins later a pedestrian entered the shop and said, " I'm from Sydney and would like to know about your Baby Croc for sale as you can't get these down where I am." My Mate kindly and simpathetically showed him the baby Croc floating on the surface of the water. He looked at it hard and said, Oh, it's plastic?!" He replied, yes that's right. The bloke then proceeded to try and smooth it over by saying that he thought that it all sounded a bit bizzar and left the shop looking embarrased but quietly disappointed.http://www.thefishtank.com.au/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif My friend turned around and walked back to his counted shaking his head and looking rather amused.
