Hi everyone,
I registered a couple of months ago but haven't actually introduced myself yet, been sort of languishing in the background, enjoying all the info and pics of great setups ppl here have.
I have a 5 x 2 x 2 aquarium but it's not set up at the moment as I haven't had the chance since moving to where I am now. Previous to that I've had it set up as a Cichlid tank and previous to that, a freshwater tropical tank. I've dabbled in marine unsuccessfully and been put off by it and also had a Saratoga and Barramundi at another time.
I'll be setting it up very soon as a Cichlid tank and look forward to getting help from all the experts on here. (anyone know the cheapest place to buy gravel ??)
Talk to you all soon!!

Hi Nel
Welcome to thefishtank!!!
Sorry can't help you with cheap gravel sources, as I have just set up (or I should probably say am still in the process of setting up) a planted tropical fresh water tank with mainly rainbows. That's why I decided to spend a bit more and went for the Dupla Ground substrate over a thin layer of Terralit substrate fertiliser.
I suspect any garden / landscape supply shop would be able to supply the gravel for a fish tank, in particular in your case as cichlids would not mind if the gravel contained limestone or other similar alkaline materials. (I'm assuming you are referring to African cichlids, not South American ones.. ..)
Good luck with your set up.
Cheers

Yep Go-Guppy, I'm looking at setting up an African, Lake Tanganyika type setup. I thought that landscaping places would have contaminated gravel or something and it'd be unsuitable. If it's fine to use, I'd say that's a great option!

Hi Nel and welcome to TFT , I would have to say that if you are looking for a cheaper substrate that what Go guppy said is OK , BUT , make sure you clean it VERY well, I work for a landscape co and the sands etc are very much full of clay and dirt, I would boil it too just to make sure.
Just my opinion.

Thanks Wombat1100, I think I'll just stick to aquarium stores then.
