hi everyone. just a quick question coming from a newby. how hard is it to set up a tank for bass? was thinking about getting a couple of murray cod, but a few forums have said they grow really quick. i have great fun catching and releasing both species. i hjave access to a 3 or 4 foot tank and am unsure about filters etc.

any help/comments would be good.

Might wanna get a bigger tank :) Unless you plan to upgrade in the near future. Most natives do get big pretty quickly. Filter's just get yourself a decent external canister.

I've got 3x 15cm bass in my 300L predator tank, they're nice but tend to want to hide unless it's feeding time (typical ambush predator) They're feeding behavour is very insightfull from an angling point of view(not that I fish much anymore).

For filtration I'm using a wet/dry sump with about 600L/H of turnover in addition to a powerhead on a big sponge filter.

Auburn aquarium has bass

They are a bit expensive at $36.

They also have some Jungle perch at $80 ea!!! I understand they are really rare but thats extortion!

I think the average Bass fingerling price is like $10 but I cant find anyone who has any at that price except livefish.com.au for $6 ea

Yeh, I was told a couple of weeks ago that bass go out of seasson around this time of year and thats why they are soooo expensive. (dont know how true this is). But I was told to wait a couple of months and they become a fifth of the price. So just try and hold out till then. But as you said there is always livefish.com. I think you can buy like 36 for $65, dont know what you would do withy 36 of them though

Cheers,
Andrew

Doesnt answer any questions really, but thought I would share this...

Two weeks ago the Fishing Association I am a member of released 30,000 Bass fingerlings into a lake system on the Gold Coast, QLD. Was a great day!

To show the mark up on these fish...we buy them from the hatcheries (approx 4-5cm long) for 30c each.

That may be so, but it's not like joe public can just wander up to the hatchery and buy one or two, what's the minimum purchace amount?

probably 500 to 1000?
most of them sell large amounts to farming facilities and such.
especially natives.
