Hi wkd

In the first instance, try ringing the shop and see what they can do regarding an exchange for a healthy fish or a refund. Make sure you speak to the manager of the shop, not a junior assistant.

Good luck,
Cheers

re: Diseases and tank problems: an overview

Hole in the Head - HITH, sometimes referred to as Head and Lateral Line Erosion - HLLE
Small holes or indentations on the head of fish, advanced cases may show markings along the lateral line of the fish. May be attributed to poor water quality, lack of proper nutrition and/or the use of activated carbon for prolonged periods. However, there have been no scientific studies about the effects of the prolonged use activate carbon causing hole in the head, it's just speculation. Be sure to give your fish the best water that you can by performing frequent water changes (http://www.fishlore.com/Maintenance.htm). Give them vitamin enriched foods and change out or stop using activated carbon. It is also thought that intestinal worms in some species may lead to hole in the head, probably due to nutitional deficiencies.

I'll add what I can to Kats list if my memeory serves me correctly

hole in the head tends to be attributed to nutritional deficiency. But not always because of poor diet but from a gut bug I think it could be (spironucleus) .This is because the gut bug is absorbing the nutrients starving the fish.
Flagyl (metrondiazole) wich is a common human drug (ask your girlfreind about it) is a typical treatment. But don't ask me to recall the dosage rate,I'd have to refer to my notes which I havn't got with me.

But I get them back to the fish shop if possible!!
