have you tried stirring the water up to see if any come to the surface? if they're dead they'll float to the top shurely, if nothing comes up i guess you could assume they been eaten!

Maybe wait till summer, when the temp stays warmer on a regular basis.
Melb is not ideal for this but it maybe worth a try.

Quite a few years ago during a big renovasion at home I moved all our cichlids into a sunken bath in the back yard.
It was heated and filtered.Over the top I made a light timber frame covered with a few sheets bubble wrap.
This insulated really well.
When I finally took the fish out they had grown huge and multiplied.

This summer I may also try something in our outdood fountain/pond.

There are a lot more predatory birds in Melbourne at the moment than usual. They've been driven into the city by the drought.

A kookaburra got my parents' goldfish from their planted pond in inner Melbourne (kookaburras in the city - lovely, though not lovely for the fish).

I think it may be a worse than usual year to try this.

Hi Wombat, I had a customer around the other day and said his friend had a dam full of guppies. He brought home about 1000 guppies, though they don't have much colour. He's advertising them as feeder fish, so yes they can survive.

Thanks for that, we have some in our local rivers and dams around my place that look like guppies but i dont think they are , all look like the females, no colours at all.

They'd be gambusia (mosquito fish)

Exactly whast I though Volenti, they'll make short work of any guppies if placed with them.

They're still there, though I should catch up as many as I can before it gets to cold soon.
