When first setting up my tank my LFS told me to salt the water. I understand this helps the fish slime coat.
How often should salt be added? Does it need to go in with water changes?

hi bundy!

theres a couple of posts in medication/treatment about salt ratios however these are for hospital tanks so i dont know how useful it will be. Also just be careful which salt you use, ive been told by my LFS not to use general table salt and so i use an aquarium salt! goodluck!

I havn't seen it bit it sounds like the pale blue conditioning salts. If it is it'll be fine as instructed.Cooking, sea or rocksalt is another kettle of fish (pun) which is fine if there is an absense of catfish.

i had a breeding pair of bristlenoses and a loach and added table salt to my tank each water change with no adverse side affects.. what might it have done to them ? as i am in the middle of getting re-set up and currently nolonger have any fish

Table salt has a running agent in it,no good for fish.
If you must use salt use rock salt or cooking salt.
But as mentioned, cats don't like it.

And if you're silly enough and use the wrong table salt, many of them have iodide in them now. Not good :p

Hey Bundy

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a Gibbercept? I've googled it with no results (except your posting, LOL).....

Do you have any pics or other names for it?

BTW, adding salt is usually applied (and sometimes necessary) for types of fresh water fish that venture out into estuaries in the wild.

Cheers
