Hi all I have been Using some Shrimp Mix for my fish and it has worked great wonders Like increase my fish's health and growth rate really recommended for africans or any type of cichlids.

This is How its Done:

1:This is how I do it. I use second rate frozen boild shrimp because that's the cheapest you can get around here. It is OK to use any type of shrimp and it doesn't matter if they are cooked or raw. It is important that they still have heads since the high amount of shell is good for the fish.

I use 1/3 of shrimp and 2/3 of green peas for herbivoure cichlids and 1/2 of shrimp and 1/2 of green peas for omnivoure and carnivoure cichlids

2:Put the shrimp in a blender or in a bowl if you wish to use a hand-mixer.

3:Grind/blend it until it becomes a smooth paste, then add frozen green peas.

4:Add some liquid multi vitamin. It is easy to find this type of vitamine at health stores or chemist.

5:Some people use eggs as a binder but I think it works alot better with gelatine powder. Dissolve the gelatine powder according to the instructions on the box or can. Some people heat the whole mix up to dissolve the gelatine but i find that unnecessary .
Make sure the mix is about room temperatured. Dissolve the gelatine powder in hot water and pour it into the mix and use the blender again for a few minutes and you will be fine.
Then put the mix into plastic bags.

6:Flatten the bags and put them in the freezer on an even surface. Ones it's frozen you can easily break it into peices and feed your fish.

This Mixture will end up working out cheaper than fish food in the long run if you get a could price for prawns lol

Anyway enjoy the recipe

And I hope it works for you!

Its great having home made food recipes.
If you get the right ones your fish will grow and flourish. They can do amazing things for fish health.

I have one that consists of beef heart, fish, spinach and spirulina which is also bound buy gelatine. My discus went great guns on this.
Pentavite is a great multi viamin to add to the food.

If any one wants I'll add my recipe also.

Marc I think that a topic like this would make a good sticky !!

I think you are right there Joz, a sticky for fish food, wont that make it hard for the fish to swallow it ??!!!!
Please add your fish food recipe as well Joz, I unfortunately I am a bit lazy so its frozen blood worm flake and pellets for my fish!
I used to feed them frozen shrimp as well but i didn't put them in a blender so it wasn't all that successful!

G'day Joz

I'd love to see your recipe, sounds great.

One question, has anybody tried using dried shrimp (as used in asian cooking) in a home made FF recipe? The dried shrimp I think may have quite a few advantages, they're small, cheap, easy to get at any asian grocery store, have the head still on and will keep for ever, if kept dry. You can even add some to your next curry  .

The one drawback I can see is that they may contain salt as part of the drying process, but they can be soaked to soften up and the soaking water which should have most of the salt can then be poured off.

Any comments?

Cheers

Peter

Hi there Go Guppy yes I know what you are talking about those dried orange coloured shrimps are great I feed my frontosa's that also and they love it and it is good food but don't feed it regularly.

I also feed my frontosa's white bait also my malawis get some as well because I cut the white bait into strips for my smaller malawis but my frontosa gets the whole piece it is a very good food source and is way cheaper than fish food pellets (But I still use pellets)
