i presently fert with aquasonic plant food - if i put root tab fert for the val (as i read here they absorb fert from roots) what is the chance of overfertilising?

Hi 33
It depends.....
Root tab fertilisers are generally a slow release type and as long as you push them reasonably deep into the substrate they should not leach out into the tank water too much. Even so it is still fertiliser, so you may want to cut down slightly on the liquid fertiliser. This way you're unlikely to get algae growing, but if you see the plants not doing as well as you thought they should, you can always increase the dose of liquid fertiliser.
But before you do increase the dose, or add fertiliser tabs to the substrate, just check that your light level is high enough, because if not, you'll just be feeding the algae. :(
Also, if you have a CO2 supply as well as good lighting, you're unlikely to overdose the plants, if you keep to the manufacturer's recommended dosage.
Cheers
