Hi ppls, I have found myself in a sticky situation with my new aquarium/vivarium, because i have both tropical fish with plants and lizards in the same tank, i think i need to use LED lighting so as not to make the tank too hot for the lizards, they are cold climate lizards, now the heat generated from the water heater will give me the heat and humidity reqd for the lizards and the fish, but if i add a t5 for the plants the heat from the light will be too great (the light would have to be mounted inside the tank because of the solid timber top , see pic). Now if i use LED lights they are cooler , generating almost no heat, BUT my plants wont benefit from the light (will they?) and I'm also concerned that the LED's will create an algae problem on the waterfall and in the water below.
Any ideas , suggestions?
heres a pic of the tank so u can see what i mean about the set up.

An LED setup of sufficient light intensity to be of beneifit to the plants would still dump a fair amount of heat into the tank, and are very pricey if you aren't DIY electronically inclined (and are still $ even if you are) I'm talking about high output LED's like Luxeon stars, 5mm "high brightness" led's are pretty useless unless you are using hundreds of them.

Given sufficient light the waterfall will probably have algae form underneath it, though I think it would add to asthetics of the tank, rather then take away from it ,another option would be to attach java moss to the top of the waterfall, it will grow down the fall and if the light is right it'll stay pretty algae free and look brilliant and natural.

What species of fish? I ask because I have a 4'x14"x14" that stays quite warm and humid under T8's. Otherwise I'd be re-thinking your choice of fish - sounds like the sacrifice will save you a fair chunk of change...

UPDATE: I have added LEDs that give a nice light to the top section of the vivarium but the aquarium section is still lacking in light due to the light not being able to penetrate the planted section above it, see pic, i have added some scissor tails and pearl danios, some other tetras aswell, the names escape me!
looking like i want it too so far anyway! water temp is at 26deg air temp at 23 deg and humidity at between 75 and 90% so far so good! see how it goes i guess, might need some sort of underwater lighting as the led i have in the water isn't cutting it!
