From what i have been told you need fish larger than 5cm. but i guess it depends on the size of your black ghost knife!

Mate i've got a 6' tank with 1 large ghost knife. He happily shares with the others which are;
4 neons!!
2 angels, were small when added but large now
2 plecos
2 clown loaches
1 upside down cat.
They all get along happily, apart from the other 6 neons that went within days of putting (10 of) them in.

medium sized placid cichlids are ideal.
such as severums, key-holes and geophagus.
gouramis and full grown giant danios would fare well too.
seeming as your BGK is almost a foot.
I'd say you transfer him to your 6" and set up a community of medium sized south american fish.

I have a 25cm BGK in with reticulated loach, big female bristle nose (she killed my male), big red tail shark. the tank was bare with mostly bottom dwellers so i added already grown congo and Colombian tetra, some black diamond neons and normal neons. they all live happily. BGK's dislocate their jaws to eat fish to 5cm as wombat said is a good size to start with.

You may try one gold severum with your BGK. The yellowish/peach color of the severum looks stunning when mixed with driftwood and the jet black color of the BGK. I'd avoid a breeding pair of cichlids to alleviate aggression issues, so I'd get one severum only. Other fish that would look nice with the BGK would be yo yo loaches. They grow to about six inches, they're colorful and they school together. Get about 6 of them for the 125. A severum, BGK, the catfish you have already, six yo yo loaches rounded out with 3 silver dollars would fill the tropical fish tank (http://www.fish-tank.co.uk/) out nicely. Use driftwood and fake plants to add even more color and you'll have a colorful assortment of fish with a lot of activity from the loaches and silver dollars.
