I have recently discovered that we have a pond which would be suitable for fish. It's dry at the moment, full of grass and working as compost... It's not very big either, about 200 litres, but that size is good for me, I don't want a huge project..

So what fish could I put in it? I'm thinking 2 shubunkin goldfish, but if there's anything else which is as hardy and colourful, I'd like to know about it. Thanks:)

A couple of questions about the pond and then on to fish,

What is it made of?
How deep is the pond?
Will it get full sun? specially in summer.
Are there plants that will shade or cover all or some of it?

Shubukins are beautiful pond fish and so are red and white comets.
I like the colour contrasts.
Fan tails work well but are slower moving and easier targets for birds.
With larger goldfish you can put in some white clouds or blue eyes to eat the mozzie wrigglers

It's wood but I'll prolly cover the inside with something, 50 cm deep, it will never get full sun, or only late in the afternoon if any, there are some palm trees and a fence in the immediate vicinity which will provide shade during the day.

Yeah I really like the red and white ones too... :) I'm not really into the fancy varities of goldfish, but I'll prolly put some mesh over it anyway to keep birds and other animals out.. we have 4 cats who are likely to make a meal of them too. White clouds is a good idea, I'll look into that, thanks:)

head to bunnings for some pond liner, its sold by the meter and isn't all that expensive, just make sure there are no sharp edges anywhere and if u can get some old carpet or something like that line it first, alternatively u can form the shape with brickys sand to a shape you want first them cover it with the liner. its easy work and ends up looking more natural than a preformed type pond. as for the fish i love the red and white ones too!
