HI all,
Just setting up a new tank that has been running for almost a month now with a few fish and appears to be cycling now.....
Anyone recommend where I should buy fish in Sydney?
I live at Carlingford and have seen so much price variance between stores near me and some stores that have a few floaters in the tanks which worries me about stock quality.......

Hi Ozpanda
Sorry mate, I don't know any LFSs in the Carlingford area (I'm in the north sydney area), but you're pretty much spot on with your observations. If you see dead fish floating in several tanks, that's surely an indication they have problems you don't want to bring home with you!!
Also, talk to the people serving, or preferably with the owner and see how helpful and knowledgable they are.
Local shops (and not so local shops) I know and have bought fish and bibs and bobs from include Manly Aquarium World, Hi-Tek Aquariums in Brookvale, Fish Culture at Cremorne and AquaPets at Bondi Junction. These may be no good to you, but if you happen to be in those areas, have a look.
Good luck
Cheers

That's a pretty broad assumption. If it's a big store, they are bound to have a dead fish here and there. GOOD stores will take sick fish off sale, but if they are housing thousands and thousands of fish and are a busy store, sometimes fish die, it's just a reality of keeping livestock.

I don't know....I hardly ever see more than one dead fish in the LFS I go to, but usually none at all...:o
Maybe they're more vigilent than other fish shops??;)

I think i have to agree with both of you GG and Woodsy, it would be nearly impossible not to be losing fish through stress when you buy as many as a LFS would, BUT if the staff were vigilant as GG says , they would be on them as soon as possible after their deaths so as not to put off potential purchasers, I personally wont buy from a tank that has a dead fish in it , but i know my LFS is good so if there is a dead fish in one tank i would still buy fish from their other tanks.
The staff cant be everywhere all the time so i guess its a personal choice.
f there is alot of dead fish throughout the store i would turn my heals and leave!
