hey guys

i am considering getting another black ghost knife fish, as i think they are awsome and the most facinating fish. however i have read that you should never keep them together, but have heard stories of people doing it with no dramas.

i was just wondering how large a tank you would need to house two black ghost knife fish to allow them to develope their own territories?

would 150 litres be enough?

if anyone has any tips or experience with keeping two BGK's togeather it would be much appriciated.

also how much does the electric signal of one BGK effect another?

cheers

Hey chief,
Hight of the tank is something to consider if you want to keep these guys properly, as for them to develop properly, they need vertical swimming space. I used to work with a chick who kept a brown and black ghost in a 30" box tank, and both grew to over 18". There wasn't much else in there though, as they were her "babies", except for a large Black Lancer and an Eel-tailed Catfish (if my memory serves me correctly). Even in that tank though, the Knife Fish would still lock jaws from time to time, and that was why she eventually separated them.
Hope that helps ;)

thanks for the info i was unaware they needed so much height i will look in to getting a higher tank.
its good to know that two can happily go togeather.

any other info would still be aprriciated and i also wanted to know roughly how badly the electric current interferes with each other.

woodsy you would not happen to know the litreige or rough measurements of that tank would you just so i can get an idea

cheers

It was a few years ago now mate, but I think the tank was around the 400L mark, a 30"x30"x30" box tank. lol, don't ask me what kind of filter was on it though. As for the electromagnetic thing, I don't think it matters too much. I mean, you see hundreds of them in tanks in-store. I could be wrong though, I just don't know that much about them...

how are you going to get another foot long black ghost?
I was thinking of getting three or four and raising them up in a community, then transferring them to their own tanks.
it's all about money.
