Does anyone have any knowledge about using UV Sterilisers in marine setup's?

I have a good Laguna one, that was used in my cichlid tank, but I've heard they can destroy good bacteria in saltwater setups?

They prevent your coraline algae from colonising your rock. When your system is running properly, you'll find you wont need it mate ;)
If you want to speed up that growth, see if you can get your hands on some Purple Up, or some good food like Fuel (Aquavitro/Seachem).

As I suspected but thanks for confirming woodsy :)

I'll be cycling the tank for a while while the live rock etc. kicks in :)

Marc,

Edit:- sorry, I realised your question was about UV. I currently do not run any UV, however I did on my previous tank and with no problems. It does help to reduce some nuisance algaes, and I always found my water was very clear and with no adverse effects on my system. I still had some good coraline growth, but nothing like what I have in my current tank. Some people swear by UV and some are against. IMO I am going to continue without it this time around.

My 8' x 3' x 2.5' High marine aquarium is approximately 8 months old now and is absolutely covered in coraline algae, my coraline really seemed to grow like crazy once my calcium reactor started to kick in, it was also helped along with the introduction of some additional living rock that also had a fair amount of coraline on it. It will happen eventually!! I am a firm believer in not adding anything to the tank that I dont have too, in the way of any additives or chemicals that I cannot monitor or check!!

Cheers
Tony.

Thanks Tony :) Your tank is evidence you know what you are talking about!

How about uploading some pics to the gallery for some of the other members to see!

I know many people say it's dangerouse to use, but i like using Ozone in my tank... i turn it on for 1 hour a day... and my tank is algea free!! and never had parasite problems... one good Ozone is better than UV i think...

*this was just my opinion.. OZone might not work out well for individuals.
